PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan women's water polo team split two games at the Brown Mini on Saturday (April 8) at the Smith Swim Center. Michigan could not hold on in a 16-14 loss to No. 13 Hartwick but rebounded with a 12-9 win over Harvard in the evening. Shana Welch (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming West Valley) became the program's second-leading point scorer after a 10-point day (9 g, 1 a), while Kristen Davis (Villa Park, Calif./Villa Park) played both games in net for the Wolverines.
In the first game of the day against Hartwick, two players from each team had four or more goals in a wild, high-scoring affair. Hartwick jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but Welch tallied two of Michigan's three goals in the first period to keep the Wolverines in the game, and the score was knotted up 3-3 entering the second.
Hartwick scored seven second-period markers, which included a three-goal run to begin the second frame to put Michigan down 6-3. Kristin Hoogenboom's (Portland, Ore./Sunset) hat trick in the second helped Michigan climb back to a 7-7 tie as the Wolverines netted four of the next five goals in the period. Hartwick was able to answer back with three of the next four scores to take a 10-8 lead into halftime.
Hoogenboom tallied another score to begin the second half to cut the deficit to 10-9, but Hartwick scored four more times to Michigan's two and led 14-11 entering the final frame.
Welch netted her fourth goal of the game late in the third period for the Wolverines. The junior captain then connected on her fifth of the game immediately to begin the fourth, moving the score to 14-12. Following Hartwick's 15th tally of the contest, Michigan reeled off two in less than a minute. Megan Hausmann (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's) completed a hat trick to go along with her four assists and three steals, while Welch dropped in her sixth to pull Michigan within one. The Wolverines had a chance to tie it on their next offensive possession, but a U-M offensive foul allowed Hartwick to counter and put the game away on Keri James' sixth goal on the match with one minute remaining. Despite its second-highest offensive output of the season, Michigan fell 16-14.
Hausmann broke the school record in steals with eight against Harvard in the second game of the day. Hausmann and Carly Strub (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) also had five points apiece in the evening contest.
Welch put Michigan out front in the first period and Hausmann answered two Harvard goals with a late goal of her own to tie it at 2-2 entering the second. Michigan outscored Harvard 3-2 in the second stanza as Welch, Hoogenboom and Sharayah Hernandez (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) each tallied a marker to allow U-M to take a 5-4 lead into halftime.
Harvard quickly erased that advantage, scoring twice to begin the third. Hoogenboom came right back for Michigan, burying a shot into the floating canvas to tie the score, 6-6. Hausmann answered another Harvard tally with a successful four-meter penalty shot attempt which tied the score. Hernandez then finished the third-period scoring to give Michigan the 8-7 lead heading into the final quarter.
Hausmann completed her second hat trick of the day 35 seconds into the fourth to increase the lead. Minutes later, Harvard got back to within one, 9-8. Strub and Welch scored back-to-back to put the game away in the middle of the period. Strub added her second of the contest following Harvard's ninth goal and Michigan went away with a 12-9 triumph.
The Wolverines play one more match tomorrow (Sunday, April 9) as they take on Brown at noon at the Smith Swim Center.

With her six goals against Hartwick and four against Harvard, junior Shana Welch moved into second place on U-M's career points list with 248. This marks the third time in her career Welch scored six or more goals. The total was reached for just the fourth time in program history. Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Matt Anderson
On the Hartwick contest ... "That was an exciting game. It was a game that was on its way to overtime. There were 30 goals. It was exciting for the fans and the offense, but horrible for the defense. I know Hartwick is not happy with their defense and we weren't happy with our defense. We both have to be happy with our offense. That game was just two teams going at it. It was up and down. We'd go on a run and then they would go on a run. Bottom line, it was an exciting game. The disappointment besides the defense was obviously not winning it, but whenever we play Hartwick we know it is going to be a fast-paced game up and down the pool. We did match up well; a little bit better than I expected and that was good to see."
On the Harvard contest ... "It was a short turnaround in game time. Harvard has an extremely solid goalie in Lydia Gardner. She is going to keep them in every game that they play. It was a case of us continuing on with what we do and we got more girls involved in a sense that Strub and Hernandez each had a couple of scores. It was nice to see that after Harvard got their seventh goal, we went on a defensive run where we then held them to two goals over the next 11 minutes. Our defense finally started kicking in towards that half of the game. With 12 goals against a goalie of Lydia's level, I am extremely happy with our offense in this game."
On the strong play of the veterans ... "It was nice to see. Strub is coming back off of that injury she has had the last few weeks. Now she is back healthy so her shooting is back on. Shana (Welch) and Megan (Hausmann) have been stepping it up as the year has gone on. It is good to see Sharayah (Hernandez) have a strong came because she too is getting healthy again. I have no complaints. We had some girls who played well. Even if they did not register goals, we had some girls who handed out some assists. Hyrne did in the Brown game. We had a better all-around offensive effort against Harvard."
On getting experience playing out East ... "We came out here for the sole reason to go toe-to-toe with the number one team in the CWPA in Hartwick. We wanted to measure up against them and we wanted to do it in the Brown pool. The size is different than what we normally play in. Though its a good pool, it is a pool that is more conducive to offense because of the size of it. It was an extremely good pool for us to play in. All four of the teams here are going to be four of the eight teams at Easterns. We're pretty much guaranteed to play two of these three teams when we go to Easterns. Playing them in this pool is mentally what we wanted to do. Yes, we wanted to get two victories today, but offensively it just shows it is a pool that plays into our hands."
