Maravic, who is ranked No. 43 in the nation, gained the upper hand early in the match by jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the first set. The 14th-ranked Devvarman, however, stepped up his play and won 11 straight games to wrap up a 6-4, 6-0 victory and advance to the round of 32.
Maravic was one of 36 at-large bids in the 64-player draw. He was the first Wolverine to compete at the NCAA Singles Championship since the 2000 season, when Matt Wright (1997-2000) earned his first and only bid as a senior.
Maravic and junior Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) will square off against Boise State's Thomas Schoeck and Luke Shields in the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championship tomorrow (Thursday, May 25) at 2:30 p.m. PDT.

Michigan Head Coach Bruce Berque
On today's match ... "Matko had a very strong start to the match. He was playing extremely well and he was executing his game plan early on. For the first five or six games he looked like the better player on the court. Devvarman just picked up his level of play tremendously. He cut down the mistakes he was making and started playing with more confidence. Matko tried the best he could to figure it out and to stay positive. Devvarman kept playing better and better, and there wasn't a whole lot Matko could do. He tried to make some adjustments strategically but nothing really worked. His game dropped off a little bit and he started to make a few errors. You have to give all the credit to Devvarman today."
On how Maravic's performance will affect tomorrow's doubles match ... "I don't think it will have much of an impact tomorrow. Unfortunately he had a quick match today, so he's going to practice with Brian (Hung) this afternoon. I know they're both tremendously excited to play. They both take a lot of pride in their doubles play. Matko will have a short memory of this match and go after tomorrow's opportunity as hard as he can."
