The Michigan Lineup at the NCAA Central Regional
The Wolverines will have only senior Amy Schmucker playing at the NCAA Central Regional. She was extended an individual invitation to the tournament.
Michigan Makes NCAA Regional Bids a Constant
After Amy Schmucker received an invitation as an individual to the NCAA Central Regional, Michigan has been represented in regional competition by the team or an individual in five of the last six seasons, making team appearances in 2001, 2002 and 2005. Former All-Big Ten golfer Laura Olin played as an invited individual at the 2004 Central Regional. In 2002, the Wolverines finished sixth at the Central Regional in East Lansing, Mich., to advance to their first appearance at the NCAA Championships, where the Maize and Blue finished 17th.
Longevity Key to Success and Depth
By playing in the 2006 Big Ten Championships, Amy Schmucker has played in 47 straight tournaments for the Maize and Blue, while Brianna Broderick and Ali Stinson have played in 35 straight tournaments for the Maize and Blue. Last season, former Wolverine Laura Olin set the U-M record playing in 50 consecutive tournaments.
Schmucker ... The Leader and Best
Amy Schmucker has finished as the top Wolverine in 12 career tournaments. So far this season she has led in nine of the 11 events. In fact, she led the Wolverines in the first eight tournaments of the season and has nine top 20, five top 10 and three top five finishes in her final season. Prior to this season he had led the Wolverines once in each of her first three seasons.
Stay on Target ... Stay on Target
Amy Schmucker continues to close her Michigan career with dramatic flare. With her team leading and career-best 74.58 stroke average, she continues to remain on pace to set the U-M all-time single season average. It was just a year ago that Brianna Broderick set the mark closing the 2004-05 season with a 75.50 per round average. Overall in her career, Schmucker is third all-time in career scoring average with a 77.45 per round average.
Schmucker Named to All-Big Ten Team
Amy Schmucker was honored by the Big Ten with an All-Big Ten second team selection after the completion of the 2006 Big Ten Championships. She becomes the seventh Wolverine to receive the conference honor. Schmucker also received the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honor at the conference championship.
Schmucker Ties All-Time U-M Single Round Total
Amy Schmucker's first round four-under 68 at the Wolverine Invitational (Oct. 1-2) was not only a career-best by two strokes, it also tied the U-M record for the top all-time single round score. Her round tally ties Laura Olin (second round) and LeAnna Wicks' (first round) 68s tallied at the 2002 Hawkeye Invitational (April 13-14) and Kim Benedict's first round 68 at the 2001 Shootout at the Legends (Oct. 8-9). Schmucker's previous best round total was a two-under 70 in the final round of the 2005 Central District Classic (Feb. 21-22).
Chalk Up No. 2 in the Career Books
Amy Schmucker won her second collegiate title in her Michigan career at the Rio Verde Collegiate (March 2-4) with a career-best 215 54-hole total (75-69-71). She won her first event last season at the 2005 Central District Classic (Feb. 21-22) with a former-career-best 216 total (74-72-70). Schmucker's individual medalist honor at the Rio Verde Collegiate (March 2-4) gives Michigan at least one individual victory in a tournament over the last six seasons.
There is Something About Arizona
The individual medalist honor for Amy Schmucker at the Rio Verde Collegiate (March 2-4) gives the Wolverines back-to-back titles at the Arizona tournament. Last year, former Wolverine Laura Olin won the 2005 East/West Rio Verde Invitational (March 3-5) as her victory helped the Wolverines to the overall team title.
Schmucker's Title Earns Her Big Ten Golfer of the Week
Amy Schmucker was named the Big Ten Conference's Golfer of the Week Thursday (March 9) after she won her second collegiate tournament at the 2006 Rio Verde Collegiate (March 2-4). Helping Michigan to a runner-up team finish, Schmucker won her second career tournament at the Rio Verde Collegiate with a career-best 215 54-hole total. After she opened with a four-over 75, she rallied firing a two-under 69 in the second round to take the tournament lead. Using an even-par 71 in the final round, she stayed the course to win medalist honors by two strokes. The accolade is her second in her career from the conference.
Hardware Adds to Michigan Legacy
With the 2005 Wolverine Invitational (Oct. 1-2) team title, Michigan has now won at least one tournament in each of the last three seasons. In fact, the Wolverines have won or finish as the runner-up in 27 of the last 79 total events. Michigan has won 27 titles in team history with 20 of those coming under Michigan coach Kathy Teichert, who is in her 13th season with the Wolverines.
Even More Trophies for the Showcase
For the second time this spring, Michigan has finished a tournament with the runner-up trophy. First the Wolverines were second in the opening spring tournament, the Rio Verde Collegiate (March 2-4) and now closed with a runner-up finish at the Illini Spring Classic (April 14-15). The two titles help give U-M coach Kathy Teichert 19 runner-up finishes in her 13-year career with the Wolverines.
