Welch Rewarded With All-America Honorable Mention

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The American Water Polo Coaches Association announced Wednesday (June 7) that University of Michigan junior captain Shana Welch (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming West Valley) was named to the AWPCA Honorable Mention All-America team. Welch's record season in which she posted a school-record 102 points earned her a second straight All-America award. She garnered All-America third team honors following a program-record 84-goal and 99-point season as a sophomore in 2005.
Welch led the Wolverines in points and goals (75) in 2006 while also matching her assist total from the previous two seasons (27). Her helper total ranked third among field players. She also fired a team-high 190 shots on goal, racked up a .395 shooting percentage and ranked second among field players in steals with 49. For her efforts, she was selected as the 2006 CWPA Western Division MVP.
The Pennsylvania native is the Michigan program leader in career hat tricks (49), goals (214), and points (267). Welch became the Wolverines' all-time leading scorer following a four-goal performance in an 8-6 win over No. 17 UC San Diego (Feb. 5) in the fourth game of the season.
The AWPCA selects first, second and third teams for its Division I All-America awards. For voting, players receive three points for a first team nomination, two points for a second team nomination, and one point for a third team nomination. A player may earn honorable mention if she receives votes from two schools, excluding her own.
