COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- USA Field Hockey announced Wednesday (July 26) the selection of University of Michigan associate head field hockey coach Tracey Fuchs to its U.S. women's national team coaching staff for the World Cup, scheduled for Sept. 27 through Oct. 8 in Madrid, Spain.
Fuchs
"I think this is a tremendous opportunity for Tracey personally," said U-M head coach Nancy Cox, "and a tremendous opportunity for Michigan field hockey. There is great reciprocity in this arrangement. U.S. Field Hockey will benefit from the presence of one of the best coaches in the nation, while Michigan will gain exposure to the highest tactical and technical knowledge in the U.S. system. We take great pride in our contribution to the continued development and success of U.S. Field Hockey."
Fuchs will be with the national squad for the first portion of the AstroTurf March on Madrid Four Nation Tournament (Aug. 17-20) as the USA will host No. 1-ranked Netherlands, No. 2 Argentina and No. 3 Australia in College Park, Md. She will rejoin the team in final preparations for the World Cup, where the USA will look to assert itself at the international level and begin its journey to the 2008 Olympic Games.
A prominent fixture of the USA Field Hockey program over the last two decades, Fuchs took the position of junior national team head coach upon her competitive playing retirement in 2004. The USA Under-21 squad, featuring Wolverine student-athletes Lori Hillman (2002-05) and Mary Fox (St. Louis, Mo./Co Jesu Academy), claimed the silver medal at the 2005 Junior Pan-American Championships and seventh place at the 2005 Junior World Cup, its best-ever finish at the world event.
The Wolverines will kick off the 2006 campaign on the road, heading to Chapel Hill, N.C., for the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Aug. 26-27. Michigan will square off against host North Carolina in a noon match at Francis E. Henry Stadium before facing Wake Forest the following day at 2 p.m.
