ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's water polo team will hold its inaugural U-M alumnae match at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23, in Canham Natatorium. The contest will feature all current players as well as former athletes from the varsity program's celebrated seven-year existence.
"It's going to be great to start off the season with the first Alumnae Game," said head coach Matt Anderson. "It's neat the alumnae pushed to have one and put it all together. The game is a great way to keep former and current players involved in the program. It also gives them a chance to play water polo again on a good football weekend. I am excited to see the relationships between newer and older players develop."
Some of the former Michigan players expected to participate include: Katherine Gregg (2001), Clare Peyrebrune (2003-04), Lindsey Hitchcock (2003-06), Megan Hausmann (2003-06), Rachel Burkons (2001-04), Stephanie Rupp (2001-04), Meg Knudtsen (2002-05), Kristin Hoogenboom (2003-06), Rebecca Godek (2002, 2004-05), Jo Antonsen (2002-05), Carly Strub (2005-06) and Melissa Karjala (2001).
The Michigan women's water polo program has experienced a plethora of success in its short lifetime, from two NCAA Championship tournament appearances to a pair of CWPA Eastern Championships in addition to five straight CWPA Division titles. The Wolverines welcome back the program's fourth-most leading scorer in Hausmann (227 points and 136 goals) as well as an Ann Arbor native in Hitchcock.
Celebrated alumnae participants also feature Knudtsen, who set program records for points (nine) and assists (seven) in a game during the 2003 campaign.
The Wolverines finished 29-12 last season, winning the CWPA Western Division Championship and advancing to the Eastern Championship final.
