Scouting the Opponents
Purdue -- The No. 19-ranked Boilermakers (9-1-2) come into Ann Arbor on a 10-game unbeaten streak, having compiled the best record among Big Ten teams. Purdue, which returns 17 letterwinners and nine starters from 2005, is led on offense by Parrissa Eyorokon's 15 points on six goals and three assists. Lauren Mason guards the net for the Boilermakers. Mason has stopped 37 shots, earned a 0.57 GAA and leads the conference with eight shutouts. Purdue posted an 11-7-2 record in 2005 and a 7-2 mark in Big Ten play for a second-place finish. The Boilermakers' season ended in the first round of the NCAA Tournament as they fell in a shootout to Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Rob Klatte enters his ninth season as head coach of the program and has earned a 91-66-15 mark. Klatte holds a 147-111-21 career record.
The Wolverines boast a 4-2-1 all-time record against Purdue. Michigan won the first three meetings from 1999-2001 by a combined score of 9-2, before dropping a 1-0 decision at Purdue in 2002. The teams played to a 1-1 draw in 2003, with Michigan winning the 2004 match 1-0 and dropping the 2005 meeting 1-0, both in West Lafayette. Purdue on the Internet: purduesports.com.
Indiana -- The Hoosiers (5-2-3) are currently on an eight-game unbeaten streak after dropping their first two contests of the year. IU holds the third-best record in the conference this season after going 7-10-2 (3-6-1 Big Ten) and finishing in sixth place in the Big Ten last season. The Hoosiers fell in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament in 2005, 3-0 to Michigan State, and return 16 letterwinners and seven starters from that squad. Lauren Lamping (2 g, 4 a) and Carrie DeFreece (3g, 1 a) lead the offense, while Stacy Van Boxmeer protects the Hoosier net. Van Boxmeer holds an 0.67 goals-against average with 30 saves and three shutouts. IU is coached by Mick Lyon, who is in his fifth season as head coach. Lyon has posted a 34-34-8 record during that span and holds a 141-99-26 career record. Prior to last season's 1-0 loss to IU in Bloomington, Ind., the Wolverines had not allowed a goal in any game against Indiana since a 3-1 loss on September 11, 1994. The Wolverines reeled off eight straight shutout wins against the Hoosiers from 1995-2002, before tying the Hoosiers 0-0 on October 11, 2003. The Wolverines shut out Indiana again in 2004, 1-0. U-M All-Time in Home Big Ten Openers
The Wolverines enter Friday night's match against Purdue on a five-game win streak in home Big Ten openers. U-M is 8-3-1 all-time in its first home Big Ten game. Michigan has never faced Purdue in such games. U-M downed Ohio State 4-2 in its first home Big Ten game last season.
Michigan Against the State of Indiana
The Maize and Blue owns a 22-17-2 all-time mark in games against programs from the state of Indiana. Michigan went 0-3 in such games last season, falling at Notre Dame, at Purdue and at Indiana. The last victory against an Indiana college came in a 1-0 win at Indiana in 2004. The Wolverines record by opponent: Butler (4-2-0), Indiana (9-2-1), Notre Dame (2-11-0), Purdue (4-2-1) and Valparaiso (3-0-0).
Wolverines Fall to .500 for the Season
Michigan lost a 2-1 heartbreaker at home on Thursday night (Sept. 21) to Oakland before falling 4-1 at No. 9 Penn State on Sunday (Sept. 24). The Wolverines held the Grizzlies to zero shots through the first 41 minutes of play and to just two first-half shots as they carried a 1-0 lead into the half following a picture-perfect combination from Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) to Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa) early in the game. Oakland responded with two second-half goals and the Wolverines could not even the score despite creating numerous scoring chances in the final fourth of the game.
No. 9 Penn State became the first team to score in the first half against Michigan this season as it carried a 1-0 lead into the half on Sunday. After allowing a second score in the 57th minute, the Wolverines bounced back when Coffman slipped home a rebound to cut the lead in half. As Michigan began to press offensively for the tying marker, Penn State earned a breakaway goal and an insurance score in the waning minutes as U-M fell for the third straight game.
Coffman on Scoring Streak
Judy Coffman scored in both games for the Wolverines this past weekend to extend her goal streak to two games. Her performance also marks the first time in her career that the senior captain has scored in back-to-back games.
Coffman also reached the 10-goal mark for her career with the tally against Penn State. She is tied with Melissa Dobbyn for the team lead in scores with three.
Spencer Maneuvering Up Starts List
Katelin Spencer (Brighton, Mich./Brighton),, who has started all 76 games played in her career, is currently within one game started of ninth place all-time in career games started, nearing Michele Pesiri (1999-2002). Andrea Kayal (1999-2002), Mari Hoff (1996-99), and Emily Schmitt (1996-99) are next on the list as each is tied for sixth with 81 career games started.
Captain Cottrell Nears Career Mark
Lindsey Cottrell (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central), who has started all 10 games this season, is one start from 50 for her career. Cottrell is two years removed from an ACL tear and her health is a key reason for the success of U-M's defense this season.
Dobbyn Takes Eighth in Career Points, Closes in on Seventh
Melissa Dobbyn took sole possession of eighth place all-time in career points with her helper against Oakland on Thursday (Sept. 21). The junior striker's 60 career points trail Debbie Flaherty's (1994-97) 61 for seventh place in the category all-time.
Past Weekend Notes
Katie Miler made her first career start against Oakland on Thursday (Sept. 21).
Kristin Thomas played in her first game of the season at Penn State on Sunday (Sept. 24). The sophomore defender saw time in two games last season.
Madison Gates made a career-high six saves at Penn State.
Michigan had allowed just four goals entering the 4-1 loss to Penn State.
