TULSA, Okla. -- Senior Matko Maravic(Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) and freshman Jason Jung(Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team competed on the first day of main draw action at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships Thursday (Oct. 4)at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Maravic earned a quality first-round singles victory before he was eliminated by the nation's top-ranked player, and Maravic and Jung suffered a first-round defeat in their career debut as a doubles pairing.
Maravic -- ranked No. 21 in the country -- posted his second straight opening-round win at the national tournament thanks to a straight-set triumph over Oklahoma State's No. 117-ranked Dmytro Petrov. Maravic came out and played solid en route to a 6-4 decision in the first set. Petrov regrouped and gave a strong effort in the second set, but Maravic was too much to handle in the tiebreaker, winning 7-4 to advance.
The early stages of the second-round match saw Maravic match the intensity of Virginia's No. 1-ranked Somdev Devvarman, but one break gave the Cavalier a 6-4 win in the first set. Devvarman then found a groove and ran away with a 6-0 triumph to oust Maravic from the 64-player field.
It marked Maravic's third career loss to the defending national singles champion. Devarmann earned a 6-4, 6-0 win in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Championship (May 24), followed by a 6-4, 6-1 victory during the 2007 dual-match season (Feb. 10).
Florida State's Jean-Yves Aubone and Clint Bowles spoiled Jung and Maravic's first-ever match as a doubles team, claiming a late break en route to an 8-6 victory that eliminated the Wolverine tandem from the 32-team bracket.
Jung and Maravic will begin consolation doubles play Friday (Oct. 5), with the duo's opponent and match time to be announced.
The Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championshipsare the first of three national championships during the 2007-08 men's collegiate tennis season. The other two events are the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships (Nov. 1-4) and the NCAA Championships (May 9-26).

On the singles play of Matko Maravic... "Matko came out and played pretty solid in his first match. He was facing an opponent who played a very similar style. Matko did a good job of staying solid throughout the first set. He was moving well and he didn't get any cheap points. In the second set, (Dmytro) Petrov settled in and it was neck and neck. I think Matko was still out-playing him; Petrov was able to just keep it close. Once it got to the breaker, Matko was just a bit tougher.
"Matko played Somdev (Devvarman) a few times before today and has always played him pretty tight in the first set. I felt like Matko had a pretty good game plan going in. He stuck to it, but unfortunately he was playing the No. 1 player in the nation. I thought Somdev looked very uncomfortable out there. Matko was doing a good job dictating play and controlling the points a bit. Somdev was able to squeeze out that first set, and then he just relaxed and raised his game up a little."
On Jason Jung and Matko Maravic's doubles performance... "They came out with a lot of energy and did a pretty good job with their serving. I thought their returns weren't as sharp as we were hoping. They didn't get too many break opportunities. We feel like they should be returning well and getting a lot of break points. They only had one break point the entire match, which is a bit discouraging. They did a good job serving but got broken to go down 7-6."
On the possibility of seeing Jason Jung and Matko Maravic in the dual-match doubles lineup... "We're still not sure where everything is going to fall. We lost two of our doubles pairings from last year, so we've got a lot of different options out there. There were some good things that I saw from this team tonight, but we're not ready to say that this is one of our pairings. We need to see more, not only from them but from the rest of our guys."
