COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan women's water polo team defeated George Washington (16-7) and Bucknell (11-7) on day two of the Terrapin Invitational hosted at Maryland's Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium. Sophomores Julie Hyrne (Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) and Mary Chatigny (Palm Springs, Calif./Palm Springs) and freshman Leah Robertson (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) all tallied hat tricks for the Wolverines, who finish a perfect 4-0 at the invitational.
Chatigny's hat trick led the way for the Wolverines in the first contest of the day, a 16-7 win over George Washington. Michigan scored the first four goals of the game and opened up a 5-1 first-quarter lead. Senior Shana Welch (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) and Chatigny each scored and dished out an assist in the period. U-M scored twice more in the second quarter on goals from sophomore Carrie Stover (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and freshman Logan Bjorkman (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) and went into halftime up 7-4.
The Wolverines continued their second-half barrage, outscoring George Washington 6-1 in the third period to extend the advantage to 13-5. Chatigny completed the hat trick with the first two goals of the new half, and freshman Farren Rixter (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) closed the third period on a cross-cage score as she received a pass from freshman Lauren Briskin (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) and buried a shot at the period buzzer.
In the final stanza, freshman Casie Kelly (Longwood, Fla./Lake Brantley) scored the second of her first two career goals and Briskin followed by adding her first two career markers, capping the scoring for the Wolverines. A late George Washington tally moved the score to 16-7 as the final horn sounded.
Hyrne netted a hat trick for Michigan's first three goals in the 11-7 win over Bucknell. Sophomore Sharayah Hernandez (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) and freshman Leah Robertson (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) followed with a goal each, giving the Wolverines a 5-1 lead heading into the second period. After an early Bucknell marker, Michigan ripped off three of the next four scores in the game to build an 8-3 halftime lead. Robertson netted the final two first-half tallies to complete her hat trick.
Robertson added her fourth tally of the match on the power play to begin the half, and Welch followed suit, scoring on a U-M 6-on-5 to extend the advantage to 10-3. Freshman Terri Bukofzer (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson) earned Michigan's final score of the game at the end of the third, and despite three fourth-quarter power-play goals by Bucknell, the Wolverines eased to the 11-7 win.
Michigan heads west next weekend for a Thursday afternoon (Feb. 22, 3 p.m. PST) match at Loyola Marymount at Burns Aquatic Center in Los Angeles. After a day off, the Wolverines will compete in the Anteater Invitational, hosted by UC Irvine on Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 24-25). Michigan is set to face No. 3 Stanford on Saturday (Feb. 24) at 11:30 a.m. PST in the first round of the tournament, which will be held at Corona del Mar High School.
