BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Hot bats and solid pitching helped the No. 9-ranked University of Michigan softball team claim a pair of dominant run-rule decisions, 9-0 and 11-0, in a doubleheader sweep at Indiana on Sunday (April 2) on the IU Softball Field.
The runs came in waves for the Wolverines, who boasted five three-run innings and an explosive five-run second inning in game two. Ten different Wolverine batters recorded at least one hit in the two-game series, headlined by senior Rebekah Milian (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS), who went 4-for-5 on the afternoon with two RBI and four runs scored, and freshman Angela Findlay (Lockport, Ill./East HS), who batted 3-for-4 with four RBI.
The U-M pitching staff boasted a combined effort in the doubleheader sweep as senior Lorilyn Wilson (Salem, Ore./Sprague), sophomore Stacy Delaney (Freeland, Mich./Freeland HS) and freshman Nikki Nemitz (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Regina HS) gave up five hits combined while throwing 10 scoreless innings and striking out 16 batters. Nemitz earned the complete-game shutout -- the fourth of her career -- in the second contest and tossed eight strikeouts -- just one shy of her personal best.
Michigan scored three runs in the second, third and fourth frames of the first game, with junior Alessandra Giampaolo (Pasadena, Calif./Polytechnic HS), in her second turn at the plate, sparking the U-M offense with a two-out RBI double -- her 17th of the season -- to bring in a pair of runs. Sophomore Allison Kidman (Tarpon Spring, Fla./Countryside HS) tallied the winning run in the previous at-bat, scoring from second base in response to freshman Maggie Viefhaus' (Eureka, Mo./Eureka HS) single to centerfield and a subsequent Indiana fielding error.
Junior Samantha Findlay (Lockport, Ill./East HS) led off the third inning with a solo shot over the fence in left center -- her second home run in as many games and sixth in the last 10 games -- while her sister Angela went long in the fourth, scoring three runs with a blast over the rightfield wall. It was the second time this season that the pair homered in the same contest.
Senior Tiffany Worthy (Yorba Linda, Calif./Lutheran HS) set a similar tone early in game two, sending one deep with two on and two out in the first inning to give Michigan the only advantage it would need. The Wolverines added five more in the second frame, chiefly due to back-to-back RBI singles through the left side from Giampaolo and Milian, and Angela Findlay's full-count RBI single two batters later, scoring Giampaolo and Milian.
Michigan wrapped up its weekend scoring with a three-run effort in the fourth frame. With the bases loaded, sophomore Teddi Ewing (Olathe, Kan./East HS) ripped a full-count single to left center to bring home Milian -- who had led off the frame with a single to first base -- and senior Stephanie Winter's (St. Charles, Mo./West HS) fourth career hit and third career run scored in the inning. Freshman Roya St. Clair (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) lifted a sacrifice fly to leftfield in the next at-bat to earn Michigan its 11th tally, tying the team's season-high run total.
Michigan will kick off a six-game homestand with a mid-week meeting against Bowling Green on Wednesday (April 25). The non-conference game is slated for a 5 p.m. start on Alumni Field.
