ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With cool temperatures in the morning and winds in the afternoon making for difficult scoring conditions, the University of Michigan women's golf team managed a 310 team round Saturday (May 12) and moved up two spots in the team standings to finish 13th at the NCAA Central Regional at the U-M Golf Course. The host Wolverines posted rounds of 311, 305 and 310 for a 926 total on the par-71, 6,116-yard layout.
On a day when the weather and numerous difficult hole locations made par a good score, freshman Ashley Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) turned in one of the day's top performances, making a birdie, 13 pars and four bogeys for a three-over-par 74. Junior Lindsay Davis (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) and freshman Andrea Ratigan (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino HS) also posted scores in the 70s, shooting 77 and 79, respectively, while seniors Ali Stinson (Penticton, B.C./Penticton Secondary) and Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS) finished with rounds of 80 and 86, respectively.
Southern Cal won the team championships by 11 shots, shooting 298 as a team in the final round to finish at 869 (283-288-289). Georgia used the day's best round -- an eight-over 292 -- to jump from sixth place to the runner-up spot at 880 (292-296-292), while TCU took third (289-291-303/883). The other five team qualifiers for the NCAA Championships were Indiana, Arizona, Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Michigan State.
Wire-to-wire individual leader Jacqui Concolino of Vanderbilt captured medalist honors, firing a two-over 73 in the final round for a 208 total (67-68-73). Southern Cal's Paola Moreno, who matched the course record with a 66 in the second round, finished four shots behind Concolino at 212 (70-66-76). Arkansas' Stacy Lewis, who tied for third (70-72-71/213), and Oral Roberts' Pamela Ontiveros, who tied for ninth (71-72-75/218), also advanced to nationals as the top two individuals not on a qualifying team.
Bauer, the only Wolverine to post three rounds in the 70s, tied for 40th with a 228 total (76-78-74). She strung together eight pars to start her final round before bogeying the ninth to make the turn in 37. Bogeys on 10, 12 and 15 dropped Bauer to four over par, but she used a large drive and approach shot to six feet for a birdie on the 17th and parred 18 for her 74 (37-37).
A quick start helped Davis to her best round of the regional, as she sandwiched a birdie on the par-4 second hole around two pars. After a bogey on 4 and a double bogey on 5, Davis played the next nine holes in one over, highlighted by a birdie 3 on the 13th hole. She bogeyed 15 and doubled 16 but closed with two pars for her 77 (39-38).
Ratigan enjoyed a stellar front nine, using birdies on the par-5 first and par-3 fifth holes to sit one under par after seven holes. Back-to-back bogeys on 8 and 9 left her one over at the turn, and she made five bogeys and a double on the back to finish at 79 (37-42).
Stinson started slowly, making three bogeys and a double bogey in the first five holes, and despite a birdie on the par-4 sixth, she was six over at the turn. However, she made six pars and three bogeys to bring it home in 38 for a total of 80 (42-38). Stinson was U-M's second highest finisher with a tie for 58th (80-72-80/232).
After opening the regional with rounds of 77 and 72, Broderick could not get anything going on the final day. She hit only three greens and, deserted by her normally reliable short game, got up and down for par just twice, on the 15th and 18th holes. She closed with a 235 total (77-72-86) to finish in a tie for 67th.
