ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The American Water Polo Coaches Association announced Tuesday (June 5) that University of Michigan senior captain Shana Welch (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming West Valley) was named to the AWPCA Honorable Mention All-America team. Welch obliterated her previous school record with 126 points in 2007 en route to her third-straight All-America distinction. She also remains the only Wolverine to have crossed the 80-goal plateau, hitting the cage 83 times in her senior campaign.
Welch
Welch earned honorable mention in 2006 as well to go with a third team selection in 2005. Her three selections make her just the third Wolverine to earn three AWPCA All-America honors. Betsey Armstrong (2002-05) who earned four All-American honors and Julie Nisbit (2001-04) are the only other Michigan players with a triumvirate of honors.
During her final season, Welch tied a two-day old program record with 10 points on a season-high seven goals and three assists against No. 4 Hawaii (Feb. 27). She concludes her career with program records in points (393), goals (297) and steals (202). She also finished third all-time in assists (97) amongst Wolverines.
The AWPCA selects first, second and third teams for its Division I All-America awards. For voting, players receive three points for a first team nomination, two points for a second team nomination, and one point for a third team nomination. A player may earn honorable mention if she receives votes from two schools, excluding her own.
