ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In a high-scoring affair with penalty cards being handed out at a frenzied pace, the University of Michigan men's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw against Wisconsin Sunday (Sept. 23) in the first Big Ten match of the season on the U-M Soccer Field.
Wisconsin scored first on a goal from a corner kick at 6:03. Minutes later, freshman defender Jeff Quijano (Simi Valley, Calif./Canoga Park) prevented another serious Badger scoring opportunity with a diving block on a Wisconsin shot.
In what became another increasingly physical match, junior forward Steve Bonnell (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Detroit Country Day) was taken down early in the first half, but bounced right back up to assist on sophomore/freshman Cam Cameron's (Saline, Mich./Saline) score-evener at 18:16. Bonnell shot the pass low to Cameron, who knocked it into the middle of the goal.
Wisconsin was able to control the tempo throughout the majority of the first half, constantly pressuring the Michigan goal. At 28:10, Wisconsin scored again on a shot that barely trickled past the grasp of junior/sophomore Patrick Sperry's (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central).
Shortly after Wisconsin pulled ahead, the game saw a barrage of penalty cards, including ones dolled out to sophomore forward Peri Marosevic (Rockford, Ill./Edison Academy) and Bonnell.
Marosevic showed resiliency by bouncing right back to score the equalizer unassisted at 33:27 from 18-yards out.
Wisconsin continued to threaten throughout the first half, but junior midfielder Alex Morisset (Shelby Township, Mich./De La Salle) prevented any further scoring by the Badgers with several key blocks. Junior defender Michael Holody (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) also contributed a vital block on a Badger opportunity off a corner kick.
The second half began with a similar flurry of yellow cards. At 52:35, Marosevic received his second yellow of the match after a breakaway opportunity, giving him a red card and an ejection from the game -- as well as a suspension for Michigan's next match. Michigan was forced to play a man down until at 57:23, when Wisconsin's Victor Diaz received his second yellow card and an ejection from the contest.
Sophomore defender Julian Robles (Los Angeles, Calif./Damien) made a huge block in the net late in the second stanza, stopping a Wisconsin forward from giving the Badgers a late lead.
Throughout the remainder of the second half, the two teams struggled for possession, both failing to score again.
While Michigan controlled the ball throughout the first overtime and much of the second, U-M could not convert its opportunities into points. The Wolverines now stand at 7-0-1 for the season.
Michigan will play the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies on Oakland Soccer Field Wednesday (Sept. 26) at 4 p.m.
