LUBBOCK, Texas -- University of Michigan senior starting pitcher Chris Fetter(Carmel, Ind./Carmel) was one of 64 collegiate baseball players named to the 2009 preseason Brooks Wallace Player of the Year watch list on Friday (Dec. 5) by the College Baseball Foundation and Mizuno.
Fetter returns to the mound for the Maize and Blue in 2009 after posting a 10-2 record and 2.47 ERA in 14 starts last season. He became just the eighth player in Wolverine history with 10 or more wins in a single season and struck out a career-best 82 hitters while helping Michigan to its third straight Big Ten Conference title, the Big Ten Tournament title and its first NCAA Regional host bid since 1986. The Wolverines also reached the NCAA Tournament and posted 40 wins for the fourth straight season. With a 26-5 record in Big Ten play, U-M broke the record for conference wins in a season formerly held by Ohio State (25, 1994 and '99).
Fetter adds the preseason Brooks Wallace watch-list honor to his growing list of accolades which includes NCAA All-America and Louisville Slugger All-America second team honors in 2008. A two-time All-Big Ten selection, Fetter was named to the All-Mideast Region team a year ago. Michigan's co-Pitcher of the Year as a junior, Fetter was selected as a tri-captain for the 2009 season by his teammates.
The Wallace Award is dedicated to the memory of former Texas Tech player and assistant coach Brooks Wallace. Wallace was a slick-fielding shortstop at Texas Tech from 1977 to 1980, leading the Red Raiders to their first-ever appearance in the Southwest Conference Tournament in 1980. In the summer of 1984, he was diagnosed with cancer and fought the disease courageously until his death on March 24, 1985, at age 27.
The Wallace Award is presented annually to the nations top collegiate baseball player in conjunction with the College Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. The 2009 award banquet will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, in the United Spirit Arena on the campus of Texas Tech University.
