
Kelley and Rosso Advance to Winter Cup Finals

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The University of Michigan men's gymnastics team qualified two competitors for the finals during preliminary action on day one of the Winter Cup Friday (Feb. 7)at the Las Vegas Sports Center. Junior Ralph Rosso (Morganville, N.J./St. John Vianney HS) and freshman Thomas Kelley (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) each qualified for the final round, which is scheduled for Saturday (Feb. 9) at 7:15 p.m. PST. The top 42 gymnasts from Thursday's two sessions qualified for the finals.
Kelley, the only current Wolverine to compete in the all-around, finished in 15th place with a score of 83.100. Kelley's highest placing event was the high bar, tying for 13th place with a 14.200. He tied for 16th on the floor exercise (14.300) and came in 20th on the vault (15.250).
Rosso's highest-placing event was the pommel horse where he tied for 15th with a score of 13.600. He competed in each event but the high bar.
Junior Joe Catrambone (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) missed making it to the finals, but he earned the highest U-M individual ranking in the high bar, tying for 13th place (14.200) with U-M teammate Thomas Kelley.
Sophomore Mel Santander (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) tied for 15th in the pommel horse with a 13.600. Santandermissed making the finals.
Former Wolverines Geoffrey Corrigan (USOTC) Edward Umphrey and Andrew Elkind (USOTC) also competed in the meet. Corrigan took 25th in the all-around with a score of 81.350. His highest individual place was sixth on the parallel bars (14.700). He will compete in the finals Saturday (Feb. 9). Umphrey competed in all events except for the high bar and pommel horse. He placed 21st on the vault (15.200) but failed to make the finals. Elkind competed in the pommel horse, rings and vault. His best finish was a tie for 53rd on rings (13.200).

Kelley will compete in the all-around finals and Rosso will competein each event but the high bar atthe finals on Saturday (Feb. 9), beginning at 7:15 p.m. PST at the Las Vegas Sports Center.
