Armstrong Named to USA Water Polo Olympic Roster

Los Angeles, Calif. -- USA Water Polo announced Monday (June 30) that former Wolverine Betsey Armstrong (2002-05) was named to the 2008 women's Olympic Water Polo roster for the upcoming Beijing Olympics. Armstrong is one of 13 players to be selected for the squad and one of 10 first-time Olympians to make the cut.
Armstrong has spent the past two years playing for the USA National Team, spending much of the time as the top goalkeeper on the team. She led the country to a gold medal at the XV Pan American Games last July -- clinching an Olympic berth -- and secured gold medal victories in both the FINA World League and FINA World Championships. At the World Championships, Armstrong was recognized as the tournaments Most Outstanding Goalkeeper.
Her illustrious four-year career in the Wolverine net was recognized at the 2008 CWPA Eastern Championship when she was inducted into the conference's hall of fame. She amassed four divisional titles and two NCAA tournament appearances during her time tending the cage for the Maize and Blue. Armstronghas a pair of divisional Most Valuable Player accolades (2003-04) and four CWPA All-Division First Team honors (2002-05) to her name andgarnered All-America recognition in each season at Michigan.
A product of Ann Arbor Huron High School, Armstrong was the Michigan water polo program's first in-state recruit. She is one of three players from outside California to make the national team and joins former Ann Arbor Pioneer High School standout Alison Gregorka in representing the state of Michigan on the squad.
Team USA opens pool play on August 11 against host China.
