YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team fell to No. 16 UIC, 4-1, on Friday (Sept. 12) evening at Eastern Michigan's Scicluna Field. Senior Steve Bonnell(St. Clair Shores, Mich./Detroit Country Day) scored U-M's lone goal on a late penalty-kick conversion.
UIC opened the scoring at 8:55 when Alen Husidic scored off of a deflection. Husidic took a shot from just inside 18-yard box that deflected off a Michigan defender and into the back of the net.
The Flames doubled their advantage early in the second half when a U-M defender was judged to have handled the ball in the box and Baggio Husidic converted.
Ian Sarachan and Charlie Trout added to the UIC lead before Bonnell's marker in the 89th minute. Junior/sophomore Cam Cameron(Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) beat a pair Flame defenders before being taken down in the box. Bonnell stepped up and coolly slotted the ball past the keeper into the corner of the goal.
Senior/junior Patrick Sperry(Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) made one save in goal for the Wolverines. Sophomore/freshman Chris Blais(Seattle, Wash./Kennedy Memorial) came on to play the last 11 minutes in goal for the Maize and Blue, making one save.
Michigan will be back in action on Sunday (Sept. 14) to take on Buffalo at Hornet Stadium Field in Saline, Mich. Game time between the Wolverines and the Bulls is set for 2 p.m.
