ANN ARBOR, Mich.-- University of Michigan head baseball coach Rich Maloney announced today (Sept. 18) that seniors Kevin Cislo(Novi, Mich./Novi), Chris Fetter(Carmel, Ind./Carmel) and Tim Kalczynski(Farmington Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) have been selected as tri-captains by their teammates for the 2009 season.
"The team selected these three guys and I believe all three are great selections," said Maloney. "All three of them are well-deserving and will lead this team well. All three are extremely hard workers who do things the right way and have great character. They have exemplified what we want from our student-athletes and have been great role models throughout their careers."
Cislo is a two-time All-Big Ten Conference selection and career .387 hitter in Big Ten play who transitioned from second base to center field last season. He went on to earn a spot on the 2008 All-Big Ten Tournament team and posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 116 chances last season.
Fetter, a 2009 All-America candidate, is a talented right-handed pitcher who was named a Louisville Slugger All-America second team starting pitcher by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper last season. Fetter also earned All-Big Ten first team and Big Ten Tournament All-Tournament nods following a 10-2 junior campaign, making him just the eighth Wolverine in program history to reach 10 victories in a season.
Kalczynski was a recipient of the 2007 Wolverine Award as voted by teammates, presented for spirit and leadership. A two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, Kalczynski is a career .263 hitter and has appeared in 28 career games. He is also a four-time U-M Athletic Academic Achievement award winner.
"What I look for in a captain are players who are committed to the team," Maloney continued. "Captains should look at things bigger than themselves, and I think all three of these guys have demonstrated that quality throughout their careers. It's not about them; they want to win for Michigan."
The new tri-captains will lead the Wolverines in a quest for its fourth consecutive Big Ten championship when they open the season at the inaugural Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge, Feb. 20-22, in St. Petersburg and Clearwater, Fla., versus South Florida, St. John's and Cincinnati.
