DETROIT, Mich. -- Junior Mauro Fuzetti(Houston, Texas/Stratford) netted a hat trick to lead the University of Michigan men's soccer team to a 5-1 victory at Detroit on Friday (Sept. 19) at Titan Field. Fuzetti's hat trick is the first for a Wolverine since 2003 and just the sixth in program history.
Junior/sophomore Cam Cameron(Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) had a goal and an assist for the Wolverines while senior Jake Stacy(Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) accounted for the other U-M marker.
Senior/junior Patrick Sperry(Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) made three saves in 52 minutes of work before yielding to redshirt freshman Chris Blais(Seattle, Wash./Kennedy Memorial) who did not face a shot on net during his 38 minutes in the cage.
Michigan sprinted out to a 1-0 lead on a marker from Fuzetti in the ninth minute of the contest when he took a long pass inside the box and put a double juke on the Titan defender, freeing him up to chip a shot into the upper corner.
Despite the Wolverines controlling much of the play, Detroit was able to even the score on a long shot in the 34th minute. Simon Zahara struck a ball from 25 yards out that soared past the outstretched hand of Sperry and into the cage.
The Wolverines reclaimed the lead three minutes later when Cameron and Stacy got together to put U-M up 2-1. Cameron interrupted a clearing attempt by a Titan defender and went back-and-forth with fifth-year senior Michael Parke(Portage, Mich./Portage Central) down the left side. Cameron carried the ball the remaining 10 yards and fed a low-flying cross into the box where Stacy was there to thump it in.
Fuzetti dented the twine again seven minutes into the second stanza, extending the Michigan lead to 3-1. Fuzetti took a pass on a run down from the right side and, with nothing but daylight between him and the goal, lined up a shot that skipped into the lower right side.
The hat trick was complete just three-and-a-half minutes later when Fuzetti scored to up the ante to 4-1. Fuzetti took a pass in a similar spot as his second goal, this time on a feed from senior Alex Morisset(Shelby Township, Mich./De La Salle).
Michigan continued to apply pressure and broke through at 82:09 when Cameron got a goal of his own to expand the lead to 5-1. Sophomore Adam Keller(Franklin, Mich./Groves) headed down a cross from sophomore Alex Wood(Northville, Mich./Northville) right to the feet of Cameron, who flicked the waist-high ball into the top right corner.
Michigan returns to the pitch to take on Oakland on Wednesday (Sept. 24) for a 7 p.m. match at Saline High School's Hornet Stadium Field in Saline, Mich.

N O T E S
Mauro Fuzetti's hat trick was the first for a Wolverine since October 26, 2003, when Knox Cameron (2001-04) netted three against Bowling Green.
Fuzetti becomes the fourth player in program history to record a hat trick, joining Mychal Turpin (3, 2001-04), Knox Cameron (1, 2001-04) and Jurgen Schmieder (1, 2002).
Fuzetti's three-goal, six-point game pushed his season totals to career highs in each category. Fuzetti has five goals on the season, surpassing his four of a season ago, and 12 points to improve upon the 10 from a season ago.
Fuzetti leapfrogged Kevin Robinson (2000-03) on the U-M career points list. His 30 career points are good for seventh all-time.
Jake Stacy set a career-high for goals in a season with his fifth marker today. He scored four times in 19 games during the 2007 campaign.
Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On bouncing back from Wednesday's loss... "It was a great response. They have been challenged and they challenged themselves and they really came out and put the energy in and put a good performance together, connecting both defensively and offensively. We are real proud of them and pleased with where they are right now."
On the team's strong movement with the ball... "While Mauro Fuzetti got three goals and was the man of the match, I think we are a team that understands and really have a good concept for the fact that when we can move the ball with one and two touches we are going to open a lot of players to do a lot of things. The team has really grasped that and it looked good today."
On the performance of Mauro Fuzetti... "Mauro is a guy that has some shake-and-bake to his game. When we put him in front of the net -- and he played up front today so he was in front of the net a lot -- he is going to score goals. But he also found space to run into the back of the defense, balls were well timed, players were looking for him. As we were building out of the back, he was operating in the hole in front of the central defense very nicely, too. He was just dangerous all day and he was rewarded for it with some big goals."
U-M Junior Mauro Fuzetti
On the hat trick... "It is always very exciting to get a hat trick. It helps out the team and we needed this big win."
