PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan baseball team used three home runs and an 11-strikeout performance from senior ace Chris Fetter(Carmel, Ind./Carmel) to defeat Siena, 11-3, on Friday afternoon (March 6) at Tradition Field in the first of a three-game weekend series.
Siena jumped on top with a leadoff home run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead before the Wolverines responded with a pair of runs in the second on a two-run homer by freshman third baseman John Lorenz(Frankfurt, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) -- the first of his career -- to put the Maize and Blue up, 2-1.
After another solo homer by Siena in the fourth inning, the Wolverines came right back to score twice in their half of the fourth on a two-out two-run single by sophomore shortstop Anthony Toth(Lorain, Ohio/St. Ignatius) to go back on top, 4-2. U-M added four more runs in the fifth with the big blow coming on the first career homer by junior rightfielder Nick Urban(Whitehall, Mich./Whitehall), a three-run shot to left, putting the Wolverines up by six, 8-2.
Fetter cruised through seven innings of work, tying his career high with 11 strikeouts, including the 200th of his career in the sixth inning. He allowed just six hits and two runs while walking just one hitter to pick up his second win of the season.
Michigan added three insurance runs in the eighth inning, including a pinch-hit two-run homer by juniorAlan Oaks(White Lake, Mich./Divine Child) in his first at bat of the season, giving U-M an 11-3 lead.
Five Wolverines had two-hit days with Urban leading the charge, going 2-for-4 with a team-high three RBI.
The Wolverines are back in action on Saturday (March 7) when they complete the three-game Siena series with doubleheader action on field five of the Tradition Field Complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Play begins at 11 a.m.
