
Four Wolverines Earn Spots on CWPA Scholar-Athlete Team

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The Collegiate Water Polo Association announced its selections for the 2009 Women's Scholar-Athlete team today (Wednesday, June 17), recognizing the classroom accomplishments of four members of the University of Michigan water polo team.
Senior Carrie Stover(Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) earned an Outstanding (3.71 to 4.0 GPA) distinction for the second straight season as she finished her pursuit of a degree in Philosophy with minors in Environment and Italian. Stover joins Wesley Ellison (2004-07) as the only two Wolverines to earn All-Academic status in each of their four seasons with the Wolverines. In addition to her two Outstanding honors, Stover claimed Superior (3.41 to 3.70 GPA) honors during her first two campaigns.
Sophomore Alison Mantel's (Miami, Fla./Gulliver) scholarly pursuits earned Superior honors for the second time. Mantel led the Maize and Blue in scoring this season with 56 goals and 87 pointswhile seeking a double major in Environment and Economics. Senior Julie Hyrne(Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) and sophomore Cara Reitz(Miami, Fla./Gulliver) were both tabbed with an Excellent (3.20 to 3.40 GPA) designation. Hyrne finished her career as the program's second-leading scorer while earning a degree in History. Reitz is a repeat selection for the Excellent honor as an Anthropology major.
The Scholar-Athlete Team, previously known as the All-Academic Team, honors varsity student-athletes who have achieved grade-point averages of 3.2 or higher and competed during the 2009 women's season. Overall, 17 varsity athletes were honored with Outstanding recognition, while 31 earned Superior and 30 were recognized with Excellent accolades.
Michigan finished the 2009 season at a program-best No.7 ranking nationally. The Wolverines put together a 35-9 season en route to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championship. The Maize and Blue picked up a CWPA Western Division championship and its second consecutive CWPA Eastern championship on the way to the national tournament.
