ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Kathy Teichert announced today (Thursday, June 25) her resignation as University of Michigan women's golf head coach effective June 26. The most successful coach in the 33-year history of the program, Teichert led the Wolverines to 24 team titles and 15 runner-up finishes, and 11 U-M players accounted for 19 individual championships during her 16 seasons as head coach.
"I've been privileged and honored to have been at the University of Michigan for the last 16 years," said Teichert. "In that time, I have coached many terrific student-athletes who have distinguished themselves in the classroom, on the golf course and in life. I wish the program every success in the future."
"We appreciate all that Kathy has done to build our women's golf program over the past 16 years," said Associate Athletic Director Bitsy Ritt. "We wish Kathy well and thank her for her years of service to the Michigan Athletic Department."
Teichert guided the Wolverines into the NCAA national spotlight with five team regional trips and two individual invitations to the NCAA postseason in the last nine years, including a berth in the NCAA Finals in 2002. The Maize and Blue finished 17th overall at the 2002 NCAA Tournament and Bess Bowers earned a top-15 individual showing with a tie for 13th.
Michigan posted seven top-five finishes at the Big Ten Conference Championships during Teichert's tenure, including a program-best runner-up performance at the 2005 Big Ten event hosted at the U-M Golf Course. The co-Big Ten Coach of the Year in 1996, Teichert had nine players honored with All-Big Ten selection.
In the classroom, Teichert's players have earned 81 Academic All-Big Ten honors and collected 123 University of Michigan Athletic Academic Achievement awards. Seven individuals earned the prestigious National Golf Coaches Association All-Academic honor.
Teichert is a Class A member of the Ladies Professional Teaching and Club Professional Division. She was a member of the NCAA Coaches District Selection Committee from 1996-99 and has been twice recognized as the Ladies Professional Golf Association's Midwest Section Coach of the Year (1997 and 1999). Teichert was also named the 1999 LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Coach of the Year. In 2006, Teichert was elected to a two-year term (2006-07 to 2007-08) as treasurer for the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA).
Prior to taking the Michigan job, Teichert was the head coach at Western Kentucky University for seven seasons (1986-87 through 1992-93).
A native of St. Johns, Mich., Teichert played collegiate golf at Michigan State University where she was twice named captain and three times earned the team's Spirit Award. She earned a bachelor's degree in parks and recreation management from Michigan State (1985).
Michigan will begin a search for Teichert's replacement immediately.
