2009-10 U-M Women's Golf Schedule
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With the start of the Cheryl Stacy era with the University of Michigan women's golf team,Stacy announced today (Wednesday, Aug. 26) the schedule for the 2009-10 season.
U-M will have a slate of 10 regular season tournaments -- five fall events and five in the spring season -- followed with the beginning of the postseason in Madison, Wis., for the 2010 Big Ten Championships at Wisconsin's University Ridge Golf Course, April 23-25. Overall, seven of U-M's 10 events will be return visits from a year ago.
"I am very pleased with our tournament schedule for this season," said Stacy. "Once again, it's very competitive and will allow us several opportunities to play some quality teams, not only around the country, but from the Big Ten as well. Throw in the diversity of playing some of the top courses in country, this schedule will only help us to get better and reach our goals as a program."
With the U-M football team home the entire month of September, the Maize and Blue will take a year hiatus from hosting the Wolverine Invitational, instead opening at the Mary Fossum Invitational in East Lansing, Mich., Sept. 12-13. In the annual event held at Michigan State's Forest Akers West Course, the Wolverines willmeet fellow Big Ten programs as well as Mid-American Conference schools.
The Wolverines travel to Madison, Wis., for the traditional Big Ten Championships preview -- the Lady Northern Invitational -- at Wisconsin's University Ridge Golf Course, Sept. 27-28. Opening up October, U-M makes a return trip to the Windy City Collegiate in Chicago, Ill., Oct. 5-6 at the Glen Club. The Maize and Blue closed with a third-place finish in last year's event -- one of its seven top five team finishes on the season.
Closing out the fall season, Stacy has added two new events to the schedule. First, the Wolverines will travel to Greenville, S.C., Oct. 19-20, for the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate at the Greenville Country Club. In the second new event and fall-ending tournament, U-M heads to Austin, Texas, Nov. 2-3, for the Challenge at Onion Creek at the Onion Creek Country Club.
Following a three-month break from competition, Michigan will open its spring season with its third straight trip to the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, Feb. 7-9. The 2010 event will be played once again at the Coco Beach Golf Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. Closing out February, the Wolverines will follow with their seventh all-time appearance at the Central District Classic in Parrish, Fla., Feb. 22-23, at the River Wilderness Country Club.
Following the annual spring break training trip to Arizona, the Wolverines will close the break playing in the Rio Verde Collegiate, March 5-7, at the Rio Verde Country Club in Rio Verde, Ariz. After a two-week stretch back in Ann Arbor, U-M will head back to the cactus state for the Mountain View Challenge in Tucson, Ariz., March 26-27, at the Mountain View Golf Club. U-M will close the spring season with trip inside Big Ten country and Bloomington, Ind., for the Indiana Invitational, April 10-11, at the IU Golf Course.
Following the conference tournament, U-M will be shooting for its eighth NCAA regional appearance in the past 10 years. The three regional sites for 2010, played May 6-8, will be: the Central Regional in Columbus, Ind., at the Otter Creek Golf Club; the East Regional in Greenville, N.C., at the Ironwood Country Club and the West Regional in Stanford, Calif., at the Stanford Golf Course.
