LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. -- Senior Leah Robertson (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) and freshman Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) of the University of Michigan water polo team have been invited to the 2009 Speedo Top 40, U.S. National Team head coach Adam Krikorian announced Monday (Sept. 28). The three-day event runs from Oct. 23-25 at the USA Water Polo National Training Center.
The 40 players will split into four teams -- Psychedelic Swirls, Electric Beat, Sonic Surf and Fluid Flight - to compete in a round-robin style tournament while being evaluated by USA National team staff. Players will be vying for selections to the Senior "A", Senior "B", Junior and Youth teams.
In addition to participating in this elite competition, the two Wolverines will make a bid to join former Michigan goalkeeper Betsey Armstrong (2002-05) on the U.S. National Team. Armstrong has been Team USA's top goalie in gold medal runs at the XV Pan American Games and the last two FINA National Championship as well as a silver medal push at the Beijing Olympics.
Robertson, one of three Wolverine captains for 2010, is making her third Speedo Top 40 appearance. She clinched a spot on the U.S. Women's Senior National "B" Team for the 2008 Born In '88 Championship. The program leader in steals with 299, Robertson became the first Wolverine selected to the NCAA Championship All-Tournament first team in program history at the 2009 championship.
Golden, a four-time NISCA/Speedo High School All-American, is seeking her first nomination to represent her country.
