CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Maartje van Rijswijk's goal with 2:09 left in the second half broke a scoreless tie and gave No. 12 Old Dominion a 1-0 win over the No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team in the first round of the NCAA Tournament this afternoon (Saturday, Nov. 13) at Henry Stadium. The Wolverines' season comes to a close as U-M finishes 2010 with a 15-7 overall record.

The first half was a defensive struggle as the two teams combined for just four shots, one on goal. Old Dominion had a good look on one of its three penalty corners in the first 35 minutes, but senior/junior Christi Barwick (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) made a save on the shot, keeping it scoreless at the halftime break.
Michigan had a 6-3 shot advantage in the second half and had a string of four straight penalty corners but could not find the back of the cage, before van Rijswijk scored the game-winner on a reverse-stick shot from the right side of the circle.
The Wolverines held a 7-6 shot advantage and had eight penalty corners, seven of which came in the second 35 minutes. Barwick and ODU goalkeeper Devon Seifert had two saves apiece.
Old Dominion will now face North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament second round tomorrow (Sunday, Nov. 14) at 2 p.m. in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Michigan's season comes to a close after winning a share of the Big Ten regular-season title and the Big Ten Tournament. The Wolverines had four All-Big Ten honorees and the Big Ten Coach of the Year in Marcia Pankratz.
