ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Cara Reitz (Miami, Fla./Gulliver) and junior Meagan Cobb (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) have been tabbed captains for the University of Michigan water polo team's 2011 season, head coach Matt Anderson announced today (Thursday, Nov. 4).
"We put a strong emphasis on our captain's role and I am happy that the team appreciates what Cara Reitz did last year and that she will be returning in that position for a second season and that they are excited that Meagan Cobb will also wear the C," Anderson said. "Both those young ladies understand the importance of being in a leadership position and are happy to embrace the challenge that comes with it."
Reitz returns as captain after posting career highs in goals (39), points (56) and steals (59) in 2010. Her 59 thefts are the eighth most by a Wolverine in program history. While guiding the Wolverines to their third straight NCAA Tournament berth, Reitz collected her third ACWPC All-Academic and CWPA Scholar-Athlete team nominations.
Cobb has amassed 89 points in 75 games over her first two seasons. Despite being sidelined for the first eight games of 2010, Cobb earned CWPA All-Western Division second team honors during her sophomore campaign. A 2010 Academic All-Big Ten selection, Cobb's .457 career shooting percentage ranks third all-time.
The Wolverines will open the 2011 season with the Michigan Kick-Off, Friday-Saturday, Jan. 22-23, inside Canham Natatorium.
