PARRISH, Fla. -- With 13 of the 15 teams in the field ranking among the top 50 in the country, the University of Michigan women's golf team closed the challenging Central District Classic with a 15th-place finish today (Tuesday, Feb. 23) at the River Wilderness Golf Club. After a slow start, the Wolverines closed with a 923 54-hole team total.
Despite senior captain Ashley Bauer's (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) opening round of two-over 74, U-M got off to a slow start yesterday (Monday, Feb. 22), posting a 320 in the first round. However, after making the turn, the Wolverines rebounded with a 21-shot improvement, posting their sixth team round under 300 with a 299.
Senior Andrea Ratigan (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino HS) and junior Min Yean Tan (Penang Island, Malaysia/Hills International College [Australia]) paced the play for U-M in the second round as each posted rounds of two-over 74, while sophomore Meagan Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) had a three-over 75. With the added momentum, Ratigan highlighted the final round today with a U-M tournament best one-over 73 as the Wolverines closed with a 304.
As she has done all season long, Ashley Bauer closed as the top Wolverines, tying for 27th at 226 (74-76-76), while Ratigan used her final-round 73 to vault into the top 40, closing tied for 39th at 229 (82-74-73). Tan (83-74-77) and Meagan Bauer (81-75-78) each tied for 60th, while junior/sophomore Jenn Cleary (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing HS) started her first collegiate event, finishing 74th at 254 (84-83-87).
With midterms ending and spring break beginning, the Wolverines will head to Arizona for their annual training trip. As the trip winds down, U-M will play at the 2010 Rio Verde Collegiate, Friday through Sunday (March 5-7). The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Rio Verde Country Club.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Cheryl Stacy
On the Central District Classic ... "It was a disappointing finish, but I also realize we were playing against an extremely strong field. I was very happy with the way the girl's bounced back in the second round after a terrible first round. That showed me a lot of heart and fight. They went out this morning being really positive, but we just had a few bad shots that cost us, so I think they were a little disappointed with how they finished today. However, our second round was the real positive, especially since it was in some tough conditions with the winds picking up throughout the end of the round. We beat a lot of teams that second round, so we can take a lot of positives from that. It was a good experience for us to play against such tough competition. We now know what is out there and how tough it can be. We are just going to continue to look ahead and keep improving every day."
