ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In a game that featured 31 hits and 23 runs, the University of Michigan baseball team came up on the wrong end of a slugfest with Michigan State, 13-10, in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday night (May 11) at the Wilpon Baseball Complex, home of historic Ray Fisher Stadium.
Sophomore designated hitter Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley) went 4-for-5 with two home runs and five runs driven in. Sophomore third baseman John Lorenz (Frankfurt, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) had three extra-base hits and senior/junior second baseman Anthony Toth (Lorain, Ohio/St. Ignatius) reached base four times, scoring twice.
After the Wolverines took a 4-1 lead in the second inning, they found themselves playing catch-up for much of the game. MSU put up four runs in the third only to have Crank strike back with a solo shot in the third frame and a three-run blast to leftfield just above the freshly minted Barry Larkin No. 16 placard to put U-M ahead 8-7 in the fourth.
Trailing 12-8 in the fifth frame, Michigan loaded the bases and chased the Spartan hurler before junior centerfielder Ryan LaMarre (Jackson, Mich./Lumen Christi) sent the first offering skipping through the left side to score two runs, pulling U-M to within two runs. MSU tacked on another run in the top of the sixth before the offensive fireworks were silenced for the final three frames. Sophomore/freshman pitcher Matt Broder (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood) pitched the final 4.1 innings for the Maize and Blue, allowing one run and scattering five hits while striking out four.
Michigan welcomes Northwestern for a three-game set beginning Friday (May 14) at 6:35 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex. The game can be seen live on the BigTenNetwork.com. The first 500 fans will receive the fourth and final set of Michigan baseball trading cards.
