ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team extended its winning streak to four games with a 6-0 triumph over Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 19) at Ocker Field.

Ainsley McCallister
Senior tri-captain Paige Laytos (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) dished out a career-high three assists -- all in the first half -- to give U-M a commanding lead. Senior Alicia Mayer (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) and freshman Rachael Mack (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School) continued their battle for the team lead in goals as Mayer scored twice for the second day in a row -- giving her five goals this season -- and Mack scored one -- extending her goal streak to four games -- to up her season total to five.
The Wolverines lit up the scoreboard at 9:02 in the first half with Mayer's fourth goal of the season. Laytos stickhandled past three Bobcat defenders a few meters outside the circle before finding Mayer near the cage, where she put the ball inside the right post, giving Michigan an early 1-0 lead.
Laytos recorded a second assist near the end of the first half, carrying the ball down the middle of Quinnipiac territory. Laytos fed the ball to the right of the goal to Mack, who put a shot past the Quinnipiac goalkeeper, thus reclaiming her goal-leader status (5) and increasing Michigan's lead, 2-0.
With less than one minute to play in the first half Michigan was awarded its fourth penalty corner of the game. Freshman Mallory Albini (Escondido, Calif/San Pasqual.) pushed the ball into play, Laytos stopped, and senior Meredith Way (Litiz, Pa./Warwick) finished with a hard shot to the back of the goal as the Wolverines went into halftime up 3-0 and with a 14-1 advantage in shots.
The Wolverines then made it 4-0 three minutes into the second half. After inserting the ball on a penalty corner, Albini crashed in towards the left post and tapped in a rebound off Way's initial shot for her first career goal.
A mere 1:17 later, Mayer played into the momentum when she collected the ball off a restart and faced little resistance entering the Bobcat circle, burying her attempt in the cage to tie her once again with Mack for the team lead in goals.
Freshman Ainsley McCallister (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) marked her first career goal, putting the Wolverines over the Bobcats 6-0 at 54:46.
Quinnipiac had slightly more offense in the second half, generating five penalty corners, but redshirt freshman Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) stopped both shots that came her way.
Michigan caps its five-game home stand on Friday (Sept. 24) when it hosts New Hampshire at 3 p.m.

NOTES
• Paige Laytos set a career high with three assists in a game, all of them coming in the first half of the 6-0 win. Previously, she had two assists against Ball State on Sept. 15, 2006.
• Laytos has a team-high six assists on the season, which is already a single-season personal best. She has 21 career helpers.
• Meredith Way's 35th career goal moves her into a three-way tie for 10th place on U-M's career goals chart. She currently is tied with Marty Maugh (1980-83) and Adrienne Hortillosa (2001-04). Way is a goal away from moving into a tie for ninth place with Stephanie Johnson (2000-03).
• Alicia Mayer scored two goals in consecutive games this weekend. She now has 18 career goals and is tied with Rachael Mack for the team lead with five.
• Mack has registered a goal in four consecutive games. The freshman posted two goals against James Madison on Sept. 10 and has a single tally in each of the last three games.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Marcia Pankratz
On today's win ... "I thought our passing was really strong. I thought our build-up was really thoughtful and organized. Coming off of a double-overtime game the day before can sometimes make your legs get really heavy, but I thought everyone ran hard and played hard. That was nice. It was a good outcome."
On the performance by Alicia Mayer ... "Alicia is a senior so she has a lot of experience. She has a lot of speed. She brings a really good energy to the game when she's out there especially on our defensive press. When she's on it really makes a big difference for us and she was on today."
U-M Senior Forward Alicia Mayer
On her play today ... "I feel like something is connecting. I feel like I have my old spark back that I felt like I was missing the first couple of games. I was really trying to play like my old self again and shoot more and pass and go for it."
On Michigan's six goals ... "We have been doing a lot of shooting drills at practice lately. One of the things we need to work on is shooting and putting the ball in the net. We've been practicing shooting and getting the rebounds. I think that has a lot to do with our high shooting percentage."
On decision making on the field ... "We work a lot on transfers. I feel like for me at least that those people are going to be there in the middle, so I can always look to them to give them the ball. I think we're connecting a lot better as a team lately and knowing where we're going to be. I think it's all connecting and coming together really well."
