
Five Wolverines Receive ACWPC All Academic Honors

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Five members of the University of Michigan water polo team were named to the 2011 Association of Collegiate Water Polo (ACWPC) All Academic Team.
The players include: 2011 graduates Alison Mantel and Cara Reitz, junior Meagan Cobb (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville), and freshmen Sophie Høegh (Coral Gables, Fla./Ransom Everglades) and Laura Milstead (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Mira Costa).
Mantel and Reitz received their third consecutive ACWPC honor while playing in all 37 matches last year.
Mantel previously earned ACWPC All-America honorable mention the past two seasons while leading Michigan in goals (49) and points (85) in 2011. She was the Collegiate Water Polo Association Women's Varsity Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a CWPA All-Western Division first team selection. Mantel graduated from Michigan as the program's career leader in assists (157) while also ranking second in career points (367) and third in career goals (210).
Reitz, a team captain last season, finished 2011 with 50 points, recording 29 goals and 21 assists. She notched two hat tricks on the year to help secure U-M wins over UC San Diego and Bucknell. In 2011, she tallied her 200th career point, an assist, to become the 11th player in program history to reach the plateau. Reitz finished her career with 128 goals and 72 assists in 157 career contests.
Cobb, Hoegh and Milstead make their first appearance on an All Academic squad.
Cobb, who was also named captain with Reitz, has amassed 137 points in 112 games over three seasons. In 2010, she earned CWPA All-Western Division second team honors and was an All-Academic Big Ten selection.
Hoegh and Milstad each played in 20 matches during their first season on the squad. Hoegh finished 2011 with 26 points, including 15 goals and 11 assists. She led all freshmen with three hat tricks on the year and ranked third in the class in assists. Milstead finished out her first season recording one hat trick, seven goals and five assists for 12 points.
The CWPA placed a total of 134 student-athletes onto the all-academic team as individuals with 24 Outstanding (4.00-3.71 GPA), 56 Superior (3.70-3.41) and 54 Excellent (3.40-3.20) were honored. Hoegh, Mantel and Milstead was listed Superior with Cobb and Reitz ranked Excellent.
