ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team was unable to overcome a two-goal halftime deficit against Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 9), losing by a 2-1 score before 1,170 fans at the U-M Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines (3-9-1, 1-2 Big Ten) controlled the action in the second half but could only manage one goal against the Badgers (6-4-2, 2-0 Big Ten).
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Adam Grinwis (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills HS) made three stops on five shots on goal. Michigan outshot the Badgers by a 23-6 margin and committed just three fouls compared to 18 by Wisconsin.
The Wolverines had a great scoring chance early in the second stanza as redshirt freshman Tyler Arnone (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville HS) flicked the ball backward to a wide-open sophomore Fabio Villas Boas Pereira (Sao Paolo, Brazil/South Kent Schoool [Conn.]) at the 18. Pereira fired top left corner but just missed the goal at 52:50.
Michigan trimmed the deficit to 2-1 as junior Kofi Opare (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul HS) headed a corner kick from Pereira into the goal at 60:12. It was the first goal of the season for Opare and the second of his career. He scored his only other tally against Wright State as a freshman on Sept. 11, 2009.
The Wolverines continued to pressure the Badgers and nearly scored the equalizer off a set piece following a foul 20 yards out at the left corner of the box. Pereira's low bending shot was kept out of the goal by Wisconsin defender AJ Cochran at 68:01.
U-M continued to pressure for the equalizer but was unable to push aside the game-tying score. The Wolverines had five shots in the final 11 minutes but could not get one past and suffered their ninth one-goal loss this season.
Wisconsin grabbed the early lead as Tomislav Zadro headed a crossing pass into the left side of the net at 8:39. Zadro got position on his marker and headed the cross from Joey Tennyson past a frozen Grinwis for a 1-0 advantage. It was the fourth goal of the season for Zadro.
The Wolverines had two scoring chances in the first half. The first came at 25:05 when Opare got a shot off from 10 yards out following a missed corner kick, but UW goalie Max Jentsch made the save at 25:05. The second opportunity came on a great move by junior Latif Alashe (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) in the middle of the field, drilling a shot from 20 yards out, but Jentsch made the save.
Wisconsin scored just before halftime as Josh Thiermann headed the ball into the net off a deflection in front of the net at 41:40. Zadro assisted on the goal with his crossing play from the right side. Zadro led the Badgers with two shots on goal.
The Wolverines outshot the Badgers, 7-5, in the first half, but all five Wisconsin shots were on goal. Both teams had two corner kicks. The Badgers were called for 11 fouls compared to just two fouls for the Wolverines.
Michigan returns to action at Oakland University on Wednesday (Oct. 12) at 7 p.m.
