Michigan Erases Three-Goal Deficit to Stun UNH in NCAA First Round

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team came back from a three-goal deficit with four markers in the second half to defeat No. 9 New Hampshire, 5-4, on Saturday (Nov. 12) in the NCAA Tournament first round at Francis E. Henry Stadium. Sophomore Rachael Mack (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School) netted a hat trick, including the game-winning goal in the 67th minute.

New Hampshire scored three goals in the game's first 24 minutes. UNH struck on a direct corner goal from Megan Bozek with assists to Hayley Rausch and Kendall Deck at 12:30. Then just 57 seconds later, Rausch scored with an assist to Kellie Joyce. Another corner play led to the Wildcats' third goal, scored by Kyle Lyons. With just 11 seconds before halftime, Mack netted the first of her three goals with an assist from freshman Axelle Wouters (Antwerp, Belgium/Onze Lieve Vrouwe Antwerp), cutting the UNH lead to 3-1 at the break.
Michigan came out of the locker room and put up another goal at 38:56. Fifth-year senior Eileen Brandes (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) scored her first career marker, taking a pass from freshman Aline Fobe (Aartsellar, Belgium/Onze Lieve Vrouwe van Lourdes) on the left post on a corner and beatng UNH keeper Katherine Nagengast. U-M then tied the contest at 54:40 when a Wildcat turnover led to a Wouters unassisted goal. However, the Wildcats came back and took a 4-3 lead at 59:59 on an unassisted goal by Whitney Frates; but the Wolverines answered with 4:57 left as Mack tipped in a pass from freshman Emy Guttman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer). The game-winner occurred at 66:46 when Mack shot over the keeper for her 17th goal and fifth game-winning tally of the season.
Junior/sophomore Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and fifth-year senior Christi Barwick (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) had three saves apiece in the win. Jones earned her ninth win of the season. Nagengast had five saves for the Wildcats.
Michigan held a 17-13 shot advantage, while UNH held a 6-4 lead in penalty corners.
The Wolverines and the top-seeded Tar Heels will face off Sunday (Nov. 13) in the NCAA quarterfinals at 2 p.m. in Chapel Hill.

• Rachael Mack scored her second hat trick of the season and fourth of her career. She had a hat trick in the 5-0 win over Ball State on Sept. 17.
• Eileen Brandes scored her first career goal in the New Hampshire win. Brandes now has a goal and 10 assists in her U-M career.
• Michigan advances to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the first time since 2007, when that team defeated Ohio 1-0 in overtime.
• Michigan and North Carolina will now play for the third time this season. North Carolina defeated U-M 5-0 Aug. 27 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and UNC won 4-3 in double overtime Oct. 23 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
• Haley Jones earned her 20th win in goal for the Maize and Blue, stopping three shots in the final 46:33.
