COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan baseball team struck first with a run in the top of the first inning before falling, 7-2, on Friday night (April 29) at Ohio State inside Bill Davis Stadium. Due to forecasted rain on Sunday (May 1), the two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow (Saturday, April 30) starting at 3:05 p.m.
Sophomore Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) extended his hitting streak to 12 games, opening the game with a single to left-center. Biondi went to third as redshirt sophomore Kevin Krantz (Traverse City, Mich./Central) reached on an error and scored on a wild pitch.
Ohio State answered with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first and made it 4-1 in the third with three consecutive two-out singles. Ohio State loaded the bases with two outs, but redshirt senior reliever Matt Gerbe (Shelby Twp., Mich./Eisenhower) induced a groundout to end the inning. A Buckeye sacrifice fly then padded the lead to 5-1.
Michigan plated a run in the seventh as freshman Alex Lakatos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, went to third on a throwing error and scored on a sacrifice fly from redshirt senior Anthony Toth (Lorain, Ohio/St. Ignatius). However, Ohio State scored once in each of the seventh and eighth innings on run-scoring triples.
Drew Rucinski moved to 5-1 on the season for the Buckeyes, allowing six hits and an earned run with the seven strikeouts and a walk. Redshirt sophomore starter Bobby Brosnahan (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) took the loss, allowing four runs and five hits with a pair of strikeouts in 2.2 innings. Gerbe went 4.2 innings of relief, allowing six hits and three run with a strikeout.
