BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The ninth-ranked University of Michigan men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss at Bowling Green State University on Friday night (Aug. 26) in its season opener at Cochrane Field. The Wolverines outshot the Falcons by a 16-11 margin but were unable to tally a goal in the season opener.
Sophomore Fabio Villas Boas Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil (South Kent School [Conn.]) led Michigan with seven shots in the game. He was followed by freshman Tyler Arnone (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville HS) and junior Latif Alashe (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) with three and two shots, respectively. Redshirt freshman Adam Grinwis (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills HS) made two stops on four shots on goal in his first career start.
After a scoreless first half, Bowling Green netted two second-half goals to end a six-game losing streak to Michigan. The Falcons grabbed the lead on a shot from Danny Baraldi in the 63rd minute. Baraldi connected on a one-timer after a steal by Sam Galloway, who was credited with an assist on the goal. BGSU added an insurance goal at 87:32 on a shot by Ryan Snashall. Ryan Comiskey and Zach Schewee assisted on the final goal of the game.
Michigan controlled the action in the first half, tallying two shots on goal and seven total shots. The Wolverines also had two corners during the opening frame. Pereira had a team-high three first-half shots. Defensively, the Wolverines did not yield a shot on goal and provided the Falcons with only three shots.
