ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team fell to No. 2 North Carolina, 5-0, on Saturday afternoon (Aug. 27) at Ocker Field in both the 2011 U-M season opener and the opener to this year's ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

North Carolina scored four of its five goals in the first 35 minutes. Two of them came on direct corners by Elizabeth Stephens and Samantha Travers, who had two goals in the game. Kelsey Kolojejchick had the final tally in the first half, while Stephens scored her second goal 17 seconds into the second period.
Michigan was led on the attack by sophomore Rachael Mack (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School), who had five shots, three of which were on goal. Senior Jess Allen (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) added Michigan's fourth shot on frame.
Redshirt sophomore Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) had three saves in the first 35 minutes, while redshirt senior Christi Barwick (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) added a pair of stops in the second half.
Michigan will wrap up the ACC/Big Ten Challenge this Sunday (Aug. 28) against Wake Forest at noon on Ocker Field.

• Michigan is hosting the ACC/Big Ten Challenge for the third time in school history and the first since 2007.
• Iowa defeated Wake Forest, 3-2, in the day's second game. Kim Scraper had two first-half goals for the Hawkeyes.
