Michigan Moves into Third after Day Two of Big Ten Championships

FRENCH LICK, Ind. -- With even-par 72s from senior Meagan Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) and sophomore Yugene Lee (Athens, Ga./Oconee County HS) and a one-over 73 from freshman Lauren Grogan (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson HS), the University of Michigan women's golf team posted a 294 second-round total today (Saturday, April 28) to move into third place with a 599 two-day total at the Big Ten Championships at the French Lick Resort's Donald Ross Course.
With three players among the top 20, the Wolverines remain in contention for the Big Ten title and will conclude their conference tournament at 9 a.m. on Sunday (April 29) off the No. 1 tee playing with Michigan State (298-292/590), the second-day leader, and Ohio State, which is second at 595 (298-297).
During the second round, Bauer found herself four under after nine holes thanks to birdies on Nos. 2, 3, 8 and 9. Opening with four straight pars on the backside, she found her first trouble of the round bogeying the par-5 14th hole and double bogeying the par-5 15th after hitting into one of the fairway bunkers. A closing bogey on No. 18 drew her to an even 72. Combined with yesterday's (Friday, April 27) first-round 74, Bauer is tied for fourth at 146 and just three shots back of leader Lindsey Solberg (73-70/143) of Michigan State.
Lee followed Bauer with her own even-par 72 to move up five spots into a tie for sixth with a 147 total. After a birdie on No. 2 put her one under early, Lee recorded 14 straight pars before a birdie on No. 17 put her two under with one hole remaining. After hooking her drive into the fairway bunker on 18, Lee made it to the green; however, she three putted to close with a double bogey, drawing her to an even-par 72 finish for the day.
Grogan struck early in her second round, birdieing her second hole of the day. After a bogey on No. 3, Grogan found herself three feet off the green on the par-5 fifth hole. Her chip hit the green and rolled in, giving her an eagle and putting her two under. She gave a stroke back with a bogey on No. 6; however, she made the turn two under after a birdie on No. 8. Six pars and three bogeys on the back nine gave her a closing one-over 73 -- her lowest score in 13 rounds. After opening with a 78 yesterday, Grogan is tied for 18th with a 151 total.
Freshmen Linda Luo (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch HS) posted a 77 in the second round to put herself in a tie for 31st at 155 (78-77), while sophomore Chelsea Pezzola (Bradenton, Fla./Saint Stephens Episcopal Prep) is tied for 47th at 160 (79-81) and fellow sophomore Alyssa Shimel (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood HS) is tied for 69th at 168 (86-82).

• Michigan began the second round of the Big Ten Championships teeing off the front nine while paired with Northwestern and Nebraska.
• Lauren Grogan recorded Michigan's first eagle of the Big Ten Championships on the par-5 fifth hole after chipping in from three feet off the green.
• Lauren Grogan's one-over 73 is her lowest single-round tally since she posed a 73 in the final round of the fall season's finale -- the Challenge at Onion Creek, held Nov. 7-8.
• Meagan Bauer, Yugene Lee and Alyssa Shimel have started all 11 events this season. In fact, Bauer has started her last 33, while Shimel has not missed a start in her two seasons, a string of 23 straight.

On the second day of the Big Ten Championships ... "There was a lot of positives to take from today. We didn't finish the way we wanted and the girls were really disappointed, but today was really a lot of fun. We were really tearing it up for quite awhile. After the round, talking with the girls, we told them to just get used to that feeling (of playing so well). This is what you are out here for. I know they looked at the leaderboard a couple of times, so they know where we stand. I will say, I think finishing on a sour note today is really going to be good for them tomorrow. It could be a redemption thing -- especially on a couple of those holes that got them today. So, we are going to have a light practice today, maybe check out the Dye Course and then really just relax until tomorrow. You always want to be in the final group and we are looking forward to being there."
