ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior captain Rachael Mack (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School) posted a career-best four goals to lead the No. 19-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team to its greatest goal output in five years, as the Wolverines posted a 10-2 victory over Ball State on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 6) in front of 391 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field.

Rachael Mack
The Wolverines struck quickly, drawing a penalty stroke off a BSU goal-line foul on U-M's first corner opportunity of the game. Senior/junior Leslie Smith (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey HS) converted the attempt -- her fifth stroke goal of the season -- with a high shot to the left corner at the 1:46 mark.
After a bit of a lull following the initial goal, sophomore Taryn Mark (West Vancouver, British Columbia/West Vancouver Secondary) kicked off a Wolverine barrage with her first collegiate goal at the 19:19 mark, getting her stick on a long forward pass into circle from junior Emy Guttman (Ann Arbor Mich./Pioneer HS) and tipping in from the left post.
The Wolverines followed with three more goals -- all from Mack -- in the final 10 minutes of the half. She netted her first two in similar fashion, collecting the ball near midfield and charging into the circle before winding up and rocketing low shots to the backboard.
Michigan scored three second-half goals in quick succession, from sophomore Shannon Scavelli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland Shrub Oak HS), Guttman and sophomore Jaime Dean (Marathon, N.Y./Whitney Point HS). Scavelli and Guttman both tallied their second goal of the weekend; the former on a rebound play directly in front of the cage, and the latter on 2-on-1 opportunity deep in the circle. Dean tipped a direct shot on another corner opportunity at 47:49, redirecting senior/junior Sammy Gray's (Wilmette, Ill./North Shore Country Day School) shot from the top of the circle.
Mack added her fourth goal on a spectacular reverse hit to the opposite upper corner at the 52:35 mark, while senior/junior Lauren Hauge (Tulsa, Okla./Holland Hall HS) closed out scoring for the Wolverines at 67:33 with a rebound goal on a late corner opportunity. It was Hauge's first collegiate goal.
Michigan outshot the Cardinals, 22-5, and outcornered them, 8-4. Fifth-year senior Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) earned one save in the Wolverine cage and split time with sophomore/freshman Chris Lueb (Hertogenbosch, Netherlands/Staples (Conn.)). BSU goalkeeper Shelby Henley stopped six U-M shots on goals.
The Wolverines will face a pair of intrastate rivals next weekend, traveling to East Lansing, Mich., to play Michigan State at 3 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 11) before returning home to meet Central Michigan at 1 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 13) at Ocker Field.

• Mack upped her career goal total to 66 to move into second place among U-M's career goals leaders, passing Mary Callam (64, 1976-79). QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Marcia Pankratz
On the Wolverines' 10 goals ... "We've been pressing a little in the scoring department. But we really relaxed today, and it's a nice confidence booster going into next weekend. It was nice to have some versatility. If we only had [Rachael] Mack, then other teams could key off her, and it'd be awfully tough. That's what was happening at the beginning of the year. Now that some other players are blossoming, like Emy Guttman and Shannon Scavelli, and getting dangerous, other teams have to pay attention to everybody. Obviously that opens it back up for Mack. So, it's nice to have the team ability to score."
On the weekend sweep ... "I'm hoping that the team is feeling a lot of confidence right now. They've been working really hard, their attitude has been awesome, and it's reflecting in their success on the field."
On Lauren Hauge's first career goal ... "It warms my heart her score. She had 2 ACL tears, two years of straight rehab, but she's diligent, relentless and hardworking. Her attitude is nothing but awesome, so that really warms my heart to see her get a goal in. It's unbelievably deserved, and it's just a great example of her being a classic Michigan student-athlete -- working really hard and rising to the top."
U-M Senior Rachael Mack
On the offensive effort ... "We've really been working on our offense. We've been having a lot of circle entries and a lot of corners, and it's been a real focus for us just to execute. I think today was a great opportunity for the girls to step up. It's good to practice new things. It's a great confidence boost scoring 10 goals in a game. We executed today, and we finished. That feels really good."
U-M Senior/Junior Lauren Hauge
On today's game ... "It was a pretty phenomenal feeling today. It was a long time coming. It's my first career goal. As a team, it's a good feeling to beat another team pretty handily. We're about to enter the longest stretch of our Big Ten season. So, this is a huge momentum shifter going into a couple of big weekends for us."
