ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- For the second straight game, the University of Michigan baseball team's hurlers put up zeroes on the scoreboard as the Maize and Blue recorded a 7-0 shutout of Central Michigan Wednesday afternoon (April 3) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. Michigan's pitching has not allowed a run in 20 consecutive innings.
Sophomore James Bourque (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) earned the win on the designated staff day. Bourque went the first three innings, tying a season high with five strikeouts and allowing just one hit. Four Wolverines relievers followed, with junior/sophomore Jay Perry (Royal Oak, Mich./U of D Jesuit) striking out a pair in two innings and fifth-year senior Chad Jasman (Bay City, Mich./Western) striking out one Chippewas to preserve the shutout in the ninth.
Michigan scored a single run in each of the first two innings for the second straight day. In the first, sophomore Zach Zott (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) tripled home junior Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty), who reached on a single with two outs. Junior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) scored sophomore Kevin White (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) with a sacrifice fly.
U-M scored its next two runs on sacrifice flies, and the Wolverines made it 5-0 in the fifth as freshman Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) singled, went to second on O'Neill sacrifice fly, stole third and scored on a CMU throwing error. A wild pitch brought in White in the sixth, and the final run came in on an run-scoring groundout off the bat of freshman Jack Sexton (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./Fordham Prep) in the eighth.
Cronenworth, O'Neill and Zott had two hits apiece, while Cronenworth joined White by scoring a pair of runs.
The Wolverines face in-state and Big Ten rival Michigan State Friday afternoon (April 5) at McLane Stadium in East Lansing, Mich. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m.
