BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team played a man down for nearly 70 minutes and fought to a 1-1 draw with the Bowling Green Falcons on Monday (Sept. 2) at Cochrane Field. Senior Fabio Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/South Kent School) made his season debut, which resulted in the lone U-M tally on the night.
After weathering an early storm in which the Falcons had a trio of shots on frame in the first 20 minutes, U-M found the breakthrough in the 41st minute, as Pereira put home a pass from James Murphy (Oxford, England/Henry Box School) with a bender from the top of the box on the left flank to give the Wolverines the 1-0 advantage.
A major turning point of the game only two minutes later, as junior captain Tyler Arnone (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) was issued a straight red card and was sent off, forcing U-M to play nearly 70 minutes with 10 men.
In the second stanza, senior/junior Adam Grinwis (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills) made a trio of saves in the second half and one in overtime, none bigger than a sprawling stop in the 59th minute off a rocket from Ryan James that was parried out of bounds for a BGSU corner.
The Falcons finally broke the undermanned U-M defense in the 82nd minute, as a flurry inside the box resulted in a loose-ball scoring play for the Falcons. After the scramble inside the area, Ryan Comiskey connected with Joey D'Agostino on a feed that knotted the contest at 1-1.
The Wolverines had one more chance prior the end of regulation, when junior/sophomore Colin McAtee (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) ripped a right-footed strike from 25 yards out that appeared destined for the top center of the goal if not for a dynamic effort from Falcon keeper Michael Wiest.
Each side had four shots in the pair of overtime periods, including U-M freshman Lars Eckenrode's (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) header in the 98th minute off a corner kick that sailed narrowly wide left. In the waning moments for action, Pereira was responsible for an in-swinging free kick that was swept up by the Falcon defense and resulted in a promising U-M corner as time expired.
In a physical match with 30 fouls, Bowling Green committed 18 to 12 for the Wolverines.
U-M returns to action Friday (Sept. 6), hosting the South Florida Bulls from U-M Soccer Stadium. The match is slated for an 8 p.m. start and follows the U-M women's soccer match vs. Pepperdine at 5 p.m.
