LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team dropped a double-overtime heartbreaker, falling to No. 12 Louisville, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 5) at Trager Stadium. The Wolverines held a narrow one-goal lead late in the game before Louisville evened the score off of a penalty corner with less than five minutes remaining in regulation.
Michigan owned the bulk of scoring overtime opportunities, outshooting the Cardinals, 6-1, in the first 15-minute frame. But Louisville struck quickly in the second, taking advantage of a counter attack down the right sideline to get two players alone in the circle. Shannon Sloss received the ball on the right side, pulling freshman goalkeeper Sam Swenson (Harrogate, England/Ashville College) before passing the ball to Lotta Kahlert, who knocked it into the open cage at the 86:56 mark.
Fifth-year senior Leslie Smith (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey HS) gave the Wolverines' the initial lead, converting their first penalty-corner opportunity of the contest with a rocket shot to the backboard at the 41:46 mark. Freshman Veerle Lubbers (Arnhem, Netherlands/Stedelijk Gymnasium) and fifth-year senior Ainsley McCallister (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) earned assists for the stop and insert, respectively.
The Wolverines maintained their lead for majority of the half, creating several additional scoring opportunities midway through the frame, before Louisville elevated its pressure late. Michigan kept the Cardinals out of the circle until the waning moments, when Louisville drew a corner and converted it with just 4:24 remaining in regulation.
Michigan outshot the Cardinals, 13-7, in the contest but was outcornered, 4-3. Swenson earned two saves in goal, while Louisville goalkeeper Sydney King stopped eight of U-M's nine shots on goal.
The Wolverines will face a pair of highly-ranked opponents next weekend, traveling to Iowa City, Iowa, to take on Iowa at 7 p.m. CST on Friday (Oct. 10) before wrapping the weekend at home on Sunday (Oct. 12) against Stanford at 1 p.m. at Phyllis Ocker Field.
