ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's tennis seniors Emina Bektas, Kristen Dodge and Sarah Lee will serve as captains for the 2014-15 season head coach Ronni Bernstein announced on Wednesday (Nov. 19).
It is the second straight season that Dodge has served as captain, with Bektas and Lee earning the honor for the first time in their career.
"This is a great senior class," Bernstein said. "They know what it takes for us to be successful, both on and off the court. They each have their own style of leading and I think that, together, they will provide the leadership that we need as we move into the dual match portion of our schedule."
Bektas, the 2014 Big Ten Athlete of the Year and ITA Singles All-American, came in at No. 11 on the preseason list. She won a Michigan-record 38 singles matches last year and went 24-3 at the No. 1 position to finish the season with a No. 16 ranking. She won the ITA Midwest Regional singles and doubles title this fall.
Lee went 31-10 last season, playing at No. 2 (4-1), No. 3 (9-3) and No. 4 (6-2) during dual-match action. She earned All-Big Ten honors and was ranked No. 108 at the end of 2014. She has earned All-Big Ten honors in each of her three seasons, getting a first-team nod last year. She is ranked No. 77 by the ITA.
Dodge enters her second year as captain after serving in that capacity last season. She went 21-7 last season, including an 11-1 record in dual matches at No. 5 and No. 6. She clinched Michigan's Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal win over Iowa with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 6 on April 25.
As a class, the trio has strung together three straight 20 win seasons and three Big Ten championships. U-M is 66-19 overall and 31-2 in Big Ten action since Bektas, Dodge and Lee have been on campus.
The Wolverines will return to action when they wrap up tournament action by hosting the Michigan Invitational, Jan. 17-19, at the Varsity Tennis Center.
