LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. -- Sophomore Kevin Wong of the University of Michigan men's tennis team made it to the round of 16 at the Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic on Friday (Nov. 7) at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club. He was the only Wolverine to make it out of the first round in singles or doubles.
Wong defeated Florida Gulf Coast's Michael Beiler by a score of 6-3, 6-2 in the first round before falling to Jason Jaruvang of Arizona in three sets in the round of 16. Michigan had a difficult tournament draw, as sophomore/freshman Alex Knight and freshman Runhao Hua each faced seeded players in their first-round matchups.
Knight lost to the fourth-seeded Michael Hemmeler of Duke, 7-6, 6-0, and Hua fell in the third set to the third-seeded Henrik Wiersholm of Virginia, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (8), 6-4.
The Wolverines were also matched up against quality opponents in doubles, as Knight and fellow sophomore/freshman Davis Crocker lost to the top-seeded duo of Caio Gomes and Yannick Zuem of North Florida, 8-2. Hua and Wong were Michigan's second doubles team and lost in the first round as well.
In consolation action on Saturday (Nov. 8), Michigan dropped each of its three singles matches.
The Maize and Blue will return to action on Jan. 20, when the dual-match season opens against Western Michigan at the Varsity Tennis Center.
