Over the next few weeks, each of the eight new faces on the Michigan ice hockey roster will be introduced to fans, providing a first look at the freshman class. This week, defenseman Cutler Martin talks with MGoBlue.com about his journey to U-M.
Martin, a 6-foot, 208 pound defenseman from East Lansing, comes to Michigan after playing three years of junior hockey with the Tri-City Storm of the United States Hockey League (USHL). He also developed in the Victory Honda midget major program with three other Wolverines -- Tony Calderone, Niko Porikos and Max Shuart. An accomplished tennis player, Martin helped East Lansing High School win a state championship in 2009, and was a two-time first team all-state selection.
On who he looked up to in the NHL ...
Nick Lidstrom because he was the best defenseman in the NHL. He always conducted himself with class and was a great role model for all hockey players, whether you were 10 years old playing squirt hockey or one of his fellow teammates in the NHL.
On his familiarity with Michigan's program ...
Living in close proximity to the university I have watched the team for many years.
On how he would describe himself as a player ...
I am an aggressive physical, hard-hitting defensive defenseman I would like to improve my consistency and my ability to perform at a high level, night in and night out.
On interests away from the rink ...
My off-ice interests include hunting, and I enjoy being outdoors and spending time with my family and friends.
On his academic pursuits here at Michigan ...
I plan on majoring in business, something that will help better my understanding of the economy and how to manage businesses.
