ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Graduate student Mackenzie Ellis of the University of Michigan field hockey team was named the Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Week in recognition of her performance against Michigan State, the league office announced Tuesday (Oct. 27). It is Ellis' first career weekly accolade and U-M's seventh this season.
Ellis contributed to three of the Wolverines' five goals in their 5-0 shutout win at Michigan State last Sunday (Oct. 25), scoring the game-winner on a penalty stroke at 5:45 before adding two assists as the insert on U-M's corner attack. As a back, Ellis also contributed to the Wolverines' sixth shutout effort in seven games. Michigan allowed just eight MSU shots, all in the final 15 minutes of the game.
After entering the year with no collegiate points, Ellis owns three goals and a team-high 12 assists in her final season. She boasts seven assists over the last three games.
U-M has claimed six of the last seven defensive nods. Sophomore goalkeeper Sam Swenson boasts three weekly honors this season, while senior back Lauren Thomas has earned a pair.
The Wolverines will wrap up the regular season at home on Sunday (Oct. 31), hosting rival Ohio State at 1 p.m. at Phyllis Ocker Field. Admission is free.
