The University of Michigan women's basketball team (4-0) continues its five-game homestand this weekend, hosting Hartford (3-2) on Friday (Nov. 27) at 7 p.m. before welcoming Oral Roberts (2-0) to Crisler Center on Sunday (Nov. 29) at 2 p.m.
Michigan is shooting 55.1 percent from the floor through four games, the second-best mark nationally and tops in the Big Ten.
U-M is fourth nationally in points per game, scoring 97.2. The Wolverines have scored at least 90 points, including 119 against USC Upstate (Nov. 23), in three of their four games this season after scoring 90 just once last season in an overtime win against Ohio State (100).
Michigan's freshman class of Nicole Munger, Boogie Brozoski, Hallie Thome and Sam Trammel have been making an impact this season. Thome (11.8 ppg), Munger (11.3 ppg) and Brozoski (10.0 ppg) are each averaging in double figures, while Trammel is averaging 4.5 ppg in 8.5 minutes per game. The quartet is accounting for 38.6 percent of Michigan's scoring and 27 percent of its rebounding through four games.
Michigan has scored at least 90 points in three of its four games this season and is averaging 97.5 points. Five players are currently scoring in double figures, led by Katelynn Flaherty's 20.5 ppg average. Prior to this season, Michigan had reached 90 points just one time during fourth-year head coach Kim Barnes Arico's tenure. U-M scored exactly 100 points last season in an overtime win over Ohio State (Jan. 11, 2015). During her 10 seasons at St. John's, KBA's teams scored at least 90 just five times, with three games happening during the 2003-04 season.
Katelynn Flaherty had the most prolific scoring game of her career on Monday night (Nov. 23), scoring 34 points on 13-for-20. It is the eighth-best point total in school history and her first 30-point game. The sophomore missed her first four shots before canning 13 of her next 16 attempts. She has scored in double figures in all four games and is the only current Wolverine to have a 30-point game.
Michigan has been spreading the wealth offensively, as five Wolverines are averaging double figures in Katelynn Flaherty (20.5), Hallie Thome (11.8), Nicole Munger (11.3), Siera Thompson (10.5) and Boogie Brozoski (10.0). Eight different Wolverines have at least one double-digit scoring game this season. In addition, Michigan is averaging 23.3 assists per game after handing out 32 against USC Upstate on Monday. The total of 32 was the third-best single-game effort in school history. Thompson leads the way for Michigan in the assist category, handing out 6.0 per game.
Hartford (3-2) comes to Ann Arbor after a 69-50 loss at Providence on Wednesday (Nov. 25). The Hawks are averaging 59.0 on 36.7 percent shooting from the field through five games. Deanna Mayza leads the way for Hartford, going for 16.8 points per game. This is the first meeting for Hartford and Michigan.
Oral Roberts (2-2) will play at Oklahoma State on Friday (Nov. 27) before playing at Crisler on Sunday (Nov. 29). ORU features two double-figure scorers in Bria Pitts (13.0 ppg) and Faith Ihim (11.0 ppg). As a team, the Golden Eagles are averaging 66.0 points on 42.7 percent shooting. Michigan holds a 1-0 series advantage, winning the only matchup on Dec 29, 1993.
Michigan's best start to a season came both during the 2011-12 and 1999-2000 seasons when Michigan opened 7-0. Entering the weekend, U-M is 4-0 for the sixth time in program history.
