BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team fell to No. 7 Maryland, 5-1, in the Big Ten Conference Tournament championship game on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 8) at the IU Field Hockey Complex. The loss halted the Wolverines' winning streak at 11 games.
The Wolverines matched Maryland toe to toe in all but the score column throughout the contest, narrowly training, 13-11, in shots while corners were even at 5-5. U-M outshot the Terps, 10-8, and outcornered them, 5-1, in the first half.
The Terps struck quickly in the first half when Welma Luus, who scored four goals in the game, got the ball all alone in the circle, pulled senior/junior goalkeeper Chris Lueb out of the cage and knocked the ball into the open net at 2:08.
Michigan took the momentum, drawing three straight corners and pressuring deep in Maryland territory, before the Terps added another at 16:44 on a fast break up the field and into the circle. Maryland added another at 27:29 on its first penalty-corner opportunity of the game.
The Wolverines responded about a minute later, at 28:47, to cut into the lead before the half. Senior Lauren Thomas sent a long hit from midfield to the top of the circle, where junior/sophomore Morgan Dever one-touched the ball to the front of the net, and junior/sophomore Allie Sardo tipped it in. It is Sardo's third goal of the season.
Maryland added two more goals in the second half -- both from Luus -- to pull away.
Lueb earned three saves in the Wolverine cage, while Maryland goalkeeper Sarah Holliday posted four stops, and Sarah Spring posted a defensive save.
Just two hours before the contest, the Big Ten office, after a deemed sportsmanship rules violation in Friday's semifinal win, announced the one-game suspension of sophomore goalkeeper Sam Swenson, who ranks second nationally in both goals-against average and save percentage.
Michigan will await the NCAA Tournament selections on Sunday (Nov. 8) at 10 p.m. The 16-team tournament opens with first- and second-round matches Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 14-15, at four campus sites to be announced. The selection show will be aired live on NCAA.com.
