SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Junior Cody Bruder tripled in a run in the eighth and broke a 5-all tie with an RBI bunt single in the ninth as the University of Michigan baseball team opened its weekend in Savannah with a 6-5 win over Tennessee Tech Friday afternoon (Feb. 20) at historic Grayson Stadium.
Bruder and senior Jackson Glines had three hits apiece while junior Jacob Cronenworth, sophomore Carmen Benedetti and senior Kevin White each had two safties to lead the U-M offense. Cronenworth also earned the win on the mound, pitching the final two innings with three strikeouts and no Golden Eagle hits.
The Wolverines trailed 3-2 heading into the top of the eighth when Cronenworth drew a one-out walk. He scampered home on Bruder's triple in the gap in left. Tennessee Tech intentionally walked Glines to get to Benedetti. With the hit and run on, Benedetti hit it in the hole at short for a single, scoring Bruder and giving U-M a 4-3 lead. It was 5-3 after fifth-year senior Kendall Patrick's RBI goundout to first.
Tennessee Tech tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on a bases-loaded walk and an RBI groundout. Freshman Jake Bivens walked to open Michigan's ninth. He was caught stealing but senior Eric Jacobson was hit by a pitch on the next TTU offering. Cronenworth moved Jacobson to third with a single to right, setting up Bruder's squeeze bunt.
Michigan loaded the bases in the first after singles from Glines and Benedetti and a walk to freshman Drew Lugbauer but the Wolverines did not score. The Maize and Blue got out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the second, then scored an unearned run in the top of the third. Cronenworth reached on an error by the TTU shortstop to start the third. He went to second on Bruder's sacrifice bunt and stole third. Cronenworth scored off of Glines' single up the middle.
Dylan Bosheers' two-run double in the third put the Golden Eagles on top 2-1. Tennessee Tech then scored a run on a bases-loaded walk in the fourth. The Wolverines got one back in the sixth as White doubled to the wall in right, moved to third on a Jacobson infield single and scored on Cronenworth's single to right.
Freshman Bryan Pall struck out three in 1.1 innings of relief, while classmate Michael Hendrickson pitched two innings and did not allow a run while striking out a batter. Sophomore Brett Adcock allowed two hits and two runs in a 2.1-inning start.
Michigan will play Davidson (noon) and Tennessee Tech (4 p.m.) Saturday afternoon (Feb. 21) in Savannah, Ga.
