LAWRENCE, Kan. -- The University of Michigan baseball team could not dig out of an early hole after Kansas scored six runs in the first three innings of play in an 8-4 Wolverine loss on Sunday afternoon (March 15) at Hoglund Ballpark.

For the third straight day, the Wolverines put up a number in the first. Junior Jacob Cronenworth led off the game with a single to center. He moved to third on junior Cody Bruder's single to right and scored as senior Kyle Jusick singled up the middle. The Jayhawks answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame as Connor McKay hit a solo home run to left, and Blair Beck brought in Colby Wright with a sacrifice fly to center.

Kansas put up two more runs in the second on back-to-back doubles from Dakota Smith and Owen Taylor and an RBI single by Justin Protacio. The Jayhawks scored two runs in the third on an RBI single by Matt McLaughlin and a Protacio sacrifice fly.

Fifth-year senior Kendall Patrick opened the top of the fourth with a solo home run to left field, cutting KU's lead to 6-2. Kansas came back with two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth for a six-run advantage. Michigan cut into that lead in the seventh after singles from senior Jackson Glines and sophomore Carmen Benedetti and a double down the left-field line by Bruder made it 8-3.

In the eighth, Michigan scored a run with two outs as freshman Jake Bivens singled and scored on a double to the gap in left by Cronenworth.

Five Wolverines (Cronenworth, Bruder, Jusick, sophomore Johnny Slater and Bivens) had two hits apiece for the Maize and Blue. The loss went to sophomore Keith Lehmann, who allowed six hits and four runs in two innings of work.

Michigan will open the Big Ten schedule this Friday (March 20) at Nebraska. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. CDT.
