LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The University of Michigan water polo team won small and big on the opening day of competition at the LMU Zumo Invitational, defeating Cal Baptist, 9-8 in overtime, before cruising past Brown, 18-5, on Friday (March 20) at the Burn Aquatic Center.
Freshman Caroline Anderson scored six goals -- hat tricks in both contests -- and added two assists. Senior Danielle Robinson netted four goals in the second game -- her first goals of the season -- while sophomore Allison Skaggs and freshman Elissa Arnold also earned hat tricks. Junior Presley Pender posted two goals and four assists.
Junior goalkeeper Julia Campbell earned the bulk of time in the Wolverine cage, posting 10 saves in the overtime win against Cal Baptist and another one in the first half against Brown. Sophomore Emily Browning also earned six stop against the Bears.
Jamie Nolan netted the game-winner against Cal Baptist with just 26 seconds left in the second overtime frame. The teams largely matched each other goal for goal through regulation and the first overtime period, and neither team ever led by more than a goal. Michigan scored first and carried a 3-2 lead after the first quarter, but Cal Baptist evened the score with three goals in the second quarter.
Anderson completed her hat trick -- her team-leading fourth of the season -- in the third quarter. Both teams tallied just one goal apiece in the third and fourth quarters and first overtime -- CBU forced extra time with a goal with just one second remaining in regulation. Junior Ali Thomason scored late in the first overtime period, but Cal Baptist responded just 24 seconds later. Nolan's goal was the only one in the second overtime.
The Wolverines scored a season-high 18 goals in the second contest and outscored Brown, 10-1, in the second half. U-M netted four in the first quarter, including a pair from Arnold and Robinson in the final 70 seconds of the frame. Both teams tallied four goals in the second, preserving U-M's four-goal cushion at halftime. Michigan scored on back-to-back 6-on-5 opportunities midway through the quarter; Robinson completed her hat trick with a power-play goal at the 4:59 mark.
Michigan dominated the second half, netting three in the third quarter and seven in the fourth. Six of their second-half tallies came on the 6-on-5, while Pender converted a five-meter penalty in the waning minutes of the fourth.
The Wolverines will close out play at the LMU Zumo Invitational tomorrow (Saturday, March 20), taking on No. 17 San Diego State at 11:45 a.m. PDT and No. 12-ranked and host Loyola Marymount at 3:30 p.m. PDT at the Burns Aquatic Center.
