
Trio Set for NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships

WACO, Texas -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team will have two participants in the 64-player NCAA Singles Championship and one team in the 32-team doubles tournament as the draws were announced on Tuesday morning (May 19).
Senior Emina Bektas, who is the first Wolverine in school history to compete in four straight singles tournaments, will face off against No. 6 seed Julia Elbaba from Virginia on Wednesday (May 20) at 5 p.m. The No. 27-ranked Bektas received the Big Ten's automatic berth and enters the tournament with a 33-7 overall record. The Wolverine senior has won 17 straight singles matches and is Michigan's winningest singles player in school history with a 129-35 career record.
Junior Ronit Yurovsky is making her third straight NCAA Singles Championship appearance, joining Bektas as the only Wolverines to participate in at least three singles tournaments. Yurovsky will square off against Cal's Denise Starr, who is currently ranked No. 44 by the ITA, on Wednesday (May 20) at 9 a.m. Yurovsky is 33-9 overall in singles and ranked No. 31. She went 4-2 at No. 1 and 17-1 at No. 2 during dual matches this season.
Bektas and freshman Alex Najarian will compete in the NCAA Doubles Championship, which begins on Thursday (May 21). The duo will face No. 2 seed Carol Zhao and Taylor Davidson of Stanford. Bektas and Najarian earned the Big Ten's automatic bid after going 18-5 at No. 1 during dual-match action for a 30-8 overall record. Bektas will be making her fourth straight doubles appearance, joining Brook Bolender (2011-14) as the only Wolverines in school history to play in four straight tournaments.
The match time for Bektas and Najarian will be announced following Wednesday's singles action.
Michigan made its fifth Sweet 16 appearance of the last six years this season, falling to No. 6 Georgia, 4-2, in the round of 16. U-M finished the season with a program-record 26 wins, while winning the Big Ten championship and Big Ten Tournament title. It is the eighth straight season that Michigan has sent at least one player to the singles tournament and the sixth straight season for a doubles team to make the tournament.
